AI Helicopters

Post by DaveB »

Hi Guy's,

A quick question..
Has anyone been able to make Helicopters work as AI (other than the Dutch team at NL2000) I don't particularly care if they fly like a bag of poo as I all I really want is for them to be scenery objects. I presumed (and wrongly so) that I could get them to show using Ttools but it just aint happenin' Probably something obvious but I sure can't see it

Hi Dave,

Yes, I have (in both FSX and when I had FS9) the key is to modify the helicopter so that it can be used as AI. I'll try and dig out the details... I'm sure I have the traffic and te modified models. Basicly the airfile etc is modified so as it behaves like an aircraft (i.e. taxi and have a short takeoff run.) This looks crap on chopers with skids, but its fine for wheel based ac, although the skid based ones do work, they just look silly taxiing. I read somewhere that AI helos have been improved in FSX but I haven't played with it yet.

Hi Ben,

Tks for that. I was wondering if the airfile needed to be changed but the question was.. to what  As I said.. how they look while they're doing their thing isn't important as it'll be happening in the middle of the night and no one will be up to see it :)

over at UKMIL we have AI Seakings and Chinooks, both work brilliantly as AI, and will take off and land in around 20 ft

Hi Dave,

I'd thought of that as a next port of call then forgot  I'll nip over as it's Seakings I'm looking at.. possibly the odd Lynx and Merlin but definately Seakings ;-)

Thanks for the prod :)

Hi Dave

I'll be happy to help you out if you get stuck, I've had seakings as AI for a long time now, there is an air file you can get I'll
dig it out for you. There are a few other neat free progs I picked up along the way, been a while now but again I'll do some
diggin. Once you get the hang of it you can get some great results.

Hi Seaking :)

Now that's what I call a line up!! ;-)

I had a dig around last night and pulled a few files off Allnodes (JayHawk being one), UKMIL and Ben sent me a set he'd made for FS9 and they all seem to rely on this particular file.. stemme_as_helicopter_2.air (or _1.air for skidders!) :) I'd pulled the JayHawk first, noticed the airfile and threw that at the Seaking and as if by magic.. I now have Frasers Ark/CU Seaking, the Culdrose ASR and this lunchtime, a Merlin operating from Culdrose!! :yipeee: Not tried to see them fly yet but looking at your shots, they appear to fly pretty darned well. I think Ben mentioned that the 'skid' helos look a little uncomfortable taxiing but otherwise, they should fly fine too :)

Next on the agenda.. a few Lynx at Yeovilton to join the Sea Vixens already present ;-) The UK2000 afcad is not all it's cracked up to be though and you only find out when you add traffic  The first Sea Vixen I added parked with it's wing going into an apron light tower then to add insult to injury, it taxied off, went over some grass then ploughed it's wing through a radar platform :o I've since rearranged the order of parking and moved the parking positions further away from buildings :) It'd be nice to have the Lynx park up at their hangar next to the museum but the afcad only has helo pads and I can't see anything moving too or from them.. unless I fly them myself

One way to solve the parking dilemas like that, when your placing your parking spots do it with the connection to the sim
turned on, do a ctrl S in the sim so your looking down from above and in slew mode, you can then place your aircraft exactly
where you want them and see it in afcad at the same time.

AI is fun but it can be very addicting.
