Your first flight 'Sim'?

HI all,

Recently installed an Atari 8-bit emulator - allowing me to relive all those Games on the 1980s that seemed so amazing at the time..

While early versions of M$F$ look rather dated now, can anyone remember some of these classics?

'Fighter Pilot' (DI - F-15)
'Solo Flight' (microprose)
'747 Simulator'
'Tomahawk' (DI)
and F15 Strike Eagle?

For an even bigger laugh, I just fired up 'Space Shuttle' - and did a re-entry and landing first go!

Those were the days!!!!

Remember putting the gear down above minimums meant a flashing 'crash' screen? None of this VFR stuff either...!

I played something similar on the Commodore PET!

First flight sim 'proper' was the imaginitively named Flight Simulation by Psion for the Spectrum, followed by Digital Integration's Fighter Pilot (much better!). Then onto FS2 on the 8086.

Just been looking at Psion's game on Migman's Flight Simulation Museum. Why oh why did they make the land blue?!

Mine was '747' for the BBC B

A crude green cockpit display flying using keyboard between rectangles (runways) via diamonds (waypoints).

I thought it was so clever as well

The first sim I remember was F-19 Stealth fighter on the Commodore Plus 4.

I also remember playing Flight Simulator 3.0 and 4.0 on an old IBM compatible 8086.

I played the original Falcon a lot as well and followed it through to it's current edition, the same with Su-27 Flanker.

Once I picked up an Amiga things began to improve a bit though, I remember Gunship, Gunship 2000, Zeewolf (I wish they'd update Zeewolf) and also a dodgy F/A-18 sim that was bugged and you couldn't get past a level with a life raft in.

Still to this day it sticks in my mind as being one of the most comprehensive and enjoyable sims I'd ever played.

In fact this thread has brought on a wave of nostalgia. I miss those cardboard cutout keyboard overlays and manuals so thick they took weeks to read.

Or like waiting 60 minutes for tapes to load - only for a crash to occur at the last gasp.....

On the PC, I particularly liked 'AV8B Harrier Assault' - blimey, this is exercising the old grey matter...

Digital ntegration's F15 for the Amstrad CPC128 was my first. That, along with ' Elite ' and ' Tau Ceti ' kept me amused for many months.

My first flight sim would have to a game called Carrier Strike Fighter, I think it was made by Jane's?

It was immensely realistic, right down to setting every button you could think of,

And then came CFS1, which I still play and prefer over the others,

Didn't make the move into civilian flightsims until FS2000 and have stayed with them ever since
