Garry - The blurb there says "twin engined" I always thought the 177 had four engined connected al la Brabizon

Hi Leif,

The info I have on the 177 states 2 x 2,950hp Daimler-Benz DB610A-1/B-1 each comprising of two inverted-vee-12 liquid-cooled engines geared to one propeller so I guess it's how you interpret the written word. It does seem to have 4 engines though by the looks of things.. the Germans described the marriage as a DB610A blah blah and it had two of these

Yes twin engine driving a single propeller in each wing..I think

I once read this killed more Germans than allies as it was rushed into service :o

I think that's probably true Garry. It is remembered as being the most troublesome bomber ever!!

Reading your post Dave it is almost in effect similar to engines that combined two arround a common shaft except it had not got quite that far.

But two driving one prop sort of makes it a twin..........ish

It seemed it was far from ready but the powers that be insisted it go into service.

This is why I think this model may fly better than the real one

No doubt an interesting subject for those into that sort of thing.

It had an irritiating tendency to catch fire an inopportune moments. One example was taken and 65 potential faults were found and rectified, which would have sorted things out nicely, but it was deemed to disruptive to introduce these modifications on the production line!

Another teensy little problem lay in it's original specification, which envisaged it acting more as a large dive bomber, which meant wings had to be strengthened, weight increased etc. In actual fact when it was used properly as a strategic bomber, or in the maritime strike role, it did show some promise but the technical faults were too severe. They proposed (and built some prototypes) a proper four-engined version, the He 274/277, despite Goering expressly forbidding such a development.
