A sad day for Manchester

As of the 6th June and the progress of Magnetic Variation, Manchester's runways which I have grown up as 24/06 with will be changed to 23/05. A very sad day!

Thats tragic. I only know them by 24/06 as well. Once introduced, I wonder how many regular pilots will get it wrong during the first few weeks.. :think:

If our experience over here is any indication, every single one, including all of the controllers will misstep at least a half-dozen times before getting it right consistently.

When they changed the runways at Washington National, it was a nightmare for weeks because of pilots and controllers getting runways mixed up.

These things happen now and then.

Heathrow used to be 28/10

Don't remember it causeing too much trouble if any in the past especially as pilots are suppose to be constantly checking.

Because the runway number is the runway's magnetic heading rounded to the closest 10 degrees. This is to allow pilots flying on visual flight rules to have a general reference to what heading the runway will be on so that they can properly identify the runway markings and ensure that the markings (i.e. 28) matches up with their current heading (between 275 and 284) so that they're absolutely sure they're landing on the right runway. If the runway's heading is 280 and they number it 270, you're going to cause issues becuase the pilots can't confirm that they're landing on the right runway.
