Where angels fear to tread....

Post by kit »

Tomorrow, Friday 25th May, is the 25th anniversary of the sinking of 'HMS Coventry' and the 'Atlantic Conveyor' during the Falklands War. I have a soft spot for the 'AC' since my wife and I flew in 'Bravo November', the only Chinook to escape the sinking back then.

For some time I've been building a large 1/144 scale (5 ft or so long) model of the 'AC' with all its aircraft and containers etc. I had intended to get it finished by now, but sadly work got in the way over the last year or so.

Last weekend, never having built a single scenery anything with FSDS3, I decided to make the ship for FS9. I must be mad, but after a few emails to friends and the odd phone call I've made a start. This is obviously WIP, and the textures are all single block colours just now, but the shape is pretty well OK I think.

Any comments?

An excellent effort, Kit.
I can only encourage you to go on and finish the project (not that I can be of any help - my knowledge of FSDS3 is 'NIL').

A fitting tribute to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice!

Kevin

Being as I'm building a Wokka at the mo, if I can help out any way with regards to low poly AI Wokkas or whatever, let me know! It'd be a fitting tribute I think.

It's looking great so far, keep up the good work mate.

Kevin,

Many thanks for the encouragement, I'm making progress on her and she now has a breakwater and foremast etc. I'm thinking that MY knowledge of FSD3 is still 'nil' as well, on a Global scale that is.

Dan,

That's terrific, thanks. A low poly Wokka would be the business to fit into the well deck. I was dreading doing that bit myself.

Actually I need four of them, and need to build six Wessex, six Harrier GR3s and eight SHARS. Somehow I think the poly count will be astronomical in the end!

Having said that, I can do some of them with their covers on which will make it easier. Only the Wessex made the trip out in the open, plus two SHARs, one on QRA and and one backup. I think I'll leave one GR3 unbagged though, just for completeness'

Does anyone know how to turn an aircaft model into a scenery model though?
Regards
Kit

Yeah you can export as BGL or mdl or whatever.. the default proceedure is to export to a mdl BEFORe you compile with xml into a bgl.. anyway.. so.. minor changes.. anyway it's easy is what I'm trying to get at.

Drop me a mail sometime when you're nearer the mark, or if you need a hand..

You are more than welcome to use the Falklands GR3 repaint (amongst others) I did for UKMIL as a basis for your AI. In fact I think UKMIL would be happy to assist in other ways I'm sure.
