Dave dumb question -- Couldnt you ask our French or German cousins if they have any Atlantique generators ? or did they use
the wrong mark of Tyne?

Thanks, Leif. Glad you enjoyed the video and you're more than welcome to host it. I've never owned a video camera and this is the first time I've shot video footage with a compact. I'm amazed at the result. The original AVI file gives incredibly sharp picture quality and sound but is much too big a file for putting on the web. I can get nearly 15mins of 640x480/30fps on a 2Gb SD card in something the size of a (thick) credit card! It's stabilised as well - the only movement is when I was caught in the propwash! Not bad for £118 from Canon Outlet on eBay! It's a little Ixus 860is with a 28mm wide-angle zoom lens.

I'm gutted....i am off my feet at home at the moment...injured myself at work......long story..... :-(

Is it a year ago since i was there for the last engine run...?

Our director got in touch with Goodrich Aerospace (the legacy authority for Rotax starters) and they confirmed that only the Vanguard and Belfast used electric start.. all others were air start. Goodrich are checking again but have already said they do not hold spares for this particular type although they are looking for any commonality between types ;-)

With only one operator of the type in the world and no availability of spares.. the chances of us getting one (even unserviceable) are slim me thinks.

RTy-1. The RTy-1 is the first production version rated at 4,370 shp (3,259 kW) with an ESFC of 0.405 lb/eshp/hr at cruise power. This engine variant powered the Vickers Vanguard Type 951.

RTy-11. Rated at 5,064 shp (3,776 kW), the RTy-11 improved upon the original Tyne with a substantial reduction in cruise fuel consumption to 0.384. This variant powered the Vanguard Type 952.

RTy-12. The RTy-12 is a 4,616 shp (3,442 kW) version used onboard the Short Brothers Belfast freighter and Canadair 400/CL-44.

RTy-20. The current production version, the RTy-20 variant is the responsibility of the consortium (see Licensee section above). For the RTy-20 Mk 21 used on the Atlantique ATL2, specifications are as follows: maximum power (ISA/SLS), 6,100 eshp, or approximately 5,667 shp (4,226 kW); air mass flow, 21.1 kg/sec; pressure ratio, 13.5:1; propeller speed, 975 rpm. The Mk 22 powers the Transall; the flat-rated Mk 801 powers the Aeritalia G-222T.

Tyne Plus. SNECMA is developing an updated version of the Tyne, dubbed Tyne Plus. The engine will basically run hotter with the benefit of an improved turbine section. The design is to incorporate composite materials, more efficient turbine airfoils and better turbine blade profiles. Power is expected to rise from 6,100 shp to 6,600 shp, time between overhauls should improve from the 2,400 hours of the Rty-20 to 4,000 hours for the Plus version.

The technical definition phase for the Tyne Plus was completed in November 1994. Assuming a go-ahead decision, preliminary development would take six months, with production tooling completed three years later. Industrial investment was estimated by Dassault at $75 million for the project. The original engine's water/methanol injection system will be deleted. The new engine is being proposed for C-160 Transall retrofits and a proposed Atlantique ATL2 Plus aircraft design.

The 953 supposedly had the same engine as the 951

Are starters engine parts or airframe????...a lot of types use Speys but nothing else sounds like a One-Eleven starting, likewise the DC 8's sounded different on starting to other types with a similar engine. :dunno:

Starters are Both Airframe and Engine components...
confused..I'll explain..and I'll generalise a bit to avoid getting too techy...the engine manufacturer will provide details of the size and shape of the starter mounting & drive on the engine and what power output in terms of shp is needed by the starter to bring the engine (and any associated propellor) to life
and its' direction of rotation

The airframe manufacturer specifies what power source(s) will be available for use by the starter
ie electricity,power in KVa and voltage, or engine bleed air supplies, and whether or not the starter has to do double duty as a generator too (a starter/generator)

Now all this is hashed out at the design stages,so between them, a specification for the starter motor is reached which is applicable to that particular airframe and engine combination.

When it comes to manuals, starters are normally found in the Airframe manual

So you can see,it may be, that two different aircraft types will use the same model of engine (and propellor) but not necessarily have the same starter...

Thanks for posting the photos and video! Good to be able to enjoy 'EP from the other side of the North Sea! :thumbsup:

(Love the Railton video as well. She does run a bit smokey at idle but Geoff isn't looking worried so I guess it's within normal limits.)
