Its not bad really in the noise department, however my original HEC power supply was quieter, not sure if at had anything to do with it having two smaller fans rather than than one that would not look out of place on a 737!
The HEC PSU to be honest I would have stayed with had it not been for the bigger bits needing the juice :)

Hi Guy's..

To put a final nail in the PSU thread.. having bought a new psu.. a new cpu and borrowed another cpu to start the system so the bios can be flashed for the new cpu, it transpires that it was the final piece of the jigsaw that had gone tit's after all.. the motherboard :'( SWMBO is gonna slay me alive so if you don't see anything from me for a while, I'll probably be in ICU at the Royal Berks :(

Just a thought Dave.... if you haven't opened the box for the CPU you can return it straight away for a full refund (distance selling regs ;) ) then use the cash to buy the MB

Chances are Ben that the CPU is in the same state as the motherboard :'( Dave you can geta new motherboard cheaper than the CPU. Just make sure it has the intel chipset not the Nvidia one for the E8400 the Intel chipset is the better one.
Like this one for £43

Hi TM..

I really don't know where I am with chipsets these days mate.. apart from the obvious. The chipset on the GA board that's just died is P35 and I feel that going for a new board with a P31 chipset is going backwards.. even though the FSB support on that chip is greater than the P35-DS3L 1600 as opposed to 1333. I can really do without spending any more money so whatever I do spend has to be on something that'll give me a few years more life with the possibility to upgrade in the future. I appreciate I've shot myself in the foot a bit there by not buying an i5 or i7 but you have to remember that this 'upgrade' didn't start life as an upgrade 8)

Best thing to do Dave is look up reviews on motherboards, the older boards are getting cheaper as folk want i7 and i5 stuff which is to your advantage as that e8400 will match them on FS if not beat them as it does not need 4 cores :D
So I guess when you look at it, it wont be overall expensive when you consider the new PSU CPU and Motherboard, trusting.... the RAM is ok ??
I know its more money but your 3/4 of the way there now!!
Not much comfort when you have to tell this to the missus :help:

Hello Mate..

Yes indeed.. the ram :worried: The more I read about Crucial Ballistix.. the less I like it. Mine is already past it's best-by according to some users but I'll cross that bridge tomorrow when this turns up..

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu ... ubcat=1155

Reviews from users all positive with many throwing a lot more at it than I intend to. One could say I'm hampered by the lack of DDR3 support but what do you do?? I don't have DDR3 ram and should I need to buy more, there's a lot of very very fast DDR2 available for very little outlay (in the grand scheme of things). To have gone for a DDR3 board would have meant buying DDR3 ram too and I'm already on very thin ice :worried:

In my heart of hearts.. I think I knew it was the mobo that had gone down and as I've never been lucky with 50/50's.. it was always going to be the mobo as soon as I bought the cpu

Good chioce of board Dave I was looking at those but they are dearer, but you will have good stuff with it to help clock the 8400 a bit ;)
Re DDR3 Ram, I know the motherboard will take it but does it work on that CPU?? To be honest you would be pushed in the normal scheme of things to see a difference between DDR2 and DDR3. I use DDR3 and haven't a clue if its any better than DDR2!!
Lets hope your present RAM is ok... this 50/50 stuff must mean its your turn for good luck :D

I may be missing something here, but I was pretty sure that DDR2 RAM won't even fit in a DDR3 slot? In which case, buying a DDR3 board means you'll MUST buy DDR3 RAM? Or have I lost the plot

Ben, the board that Dave linked to is a DDR2 board so no problems there.

Dave, there's plenty of life left in LGA775 processors yet - you can get 3Ghz+ without overclocking so you should be safe for a few years yet (unless you really do want to switch to FSX full time ;) (kidding).

I've got a similar dilema - got an aging Q6600, overclocked to 3.24Ghz but would like something faster - i7 and i9 are a bit too pricey (new CPU, new MB, new RAM) so am considering staying with the same platform but upgrading the CPU. Your MB choice looks pretty good - hopefully you can get it past the money monster!

Regards,
Chris
