Well I've made countless searches for Bobbin on the Hurricane but not come up with anything. Still a mystery.

Nigel.

Hi chaps. Just reading PC Pilot and there is an article on the Aeroplane Heaven
Hurricane. It mentions retractable tail hook and catapult BOBBINS.
Any use to anyone ?
Brian..

Hi Brian, now that could be the answer as also found out:
That in 1940 General Aircraft Limited converted approximately 250 Mk.1 aircraft as the Sea Hurricane Mk.1A.
These were launched from Catapult Armed and Merchantman Ships (CAMS) - ships that were fitted with catapults for launching but unfortunately they did not have the capability for recovery. Consequently, this method could only be used when in range of land otherwise the pilots were forced to ditch and abandon the aircraft at sea.
Many thanks for solving this mystery.
Regards
Nigel.

to me
Hi Mike:
Bit of a mystery re those instructions. We do not have it on our airplane and checking the Hurricane Explored DVD, which features 5 restored Hurrianes in the UK, it does not appear on any of them. Afraid we cannot be of assistance in this matter.
Regards,
Richard de Boer, Pres.
Apart from this dead end, I had checked the Pilot's Notes, and the appendix re Sea Hurricane stated that there were no additional Pilot's Notes.
In my initial post, I suggested that it was a SH special, but I can't find,
how did the pilot check the bobbins. There is a picture of two red rollers alongside the oil cooler, and there's a detailed article on Key Aero, referencing spools. I'm a member there, but to see the full article, you have to subscribe, at some rather high price. UK Fleet Air Arm won't answer questions, and a search for Sea Hurricane produces no results.

Old Wardens Sea Hurricane is fitted with red bobbins. Not sure what you would need to check though?
BTW what does she sound like?
