Appreciate that well known brands get the qudos but heard good stuff about these I will be opting for one that Santa stuff is cack anyway he doesnt exist unlike the green hornet

Still trying to get to grips with what a dedicated 12v rail is Some don't have one, some have one and that 800w psu in your link has two. It should all be good news shouldn't it Surely more is better??

Dave I posted on the overclockers forum and they all say the same get something you know is relaible, bugger I thought I was on to a winner, anyway they suggest this
700W OCZ ModXStream Pro Modular Power Supply

So hunting around I found it for less than £65, now this is a known good PSU whacking out 25A on each of the two 12v rails... that should be enough!!

Yes.. I looked at that this morning and twitched a little All this rail stuff is begining to do my head in. I never knew they existed until yesterday and here I am worrying about them The Corsair 650w that JohnP has kicks out 50a off a single rail I note on O/C the HX series say what they're producing and the slightly cheaper TX series don't. I'd imagine the OCZ 700w PSU is going to be ok and it's markedly cheaper than the Corsair HX650 so can anyone tell me if 50a off a single rail is better than 2 x 25a coming off 2??

Worth noting that I have no plans to use any more than 1 graphics card and I can't see the system expanding much above what is already there running off a 'now dead' 450-480w PSU

The second special characteristic is the single 12V rail. In a time when other manufacturers are building up to six 12V rails in their PSUs, Silverstone has come up with a single rail able to pull a load up to 54 amps. If we look to the actual Intel ATX12V specs, it states that there should be no rail with more than 20 amps for safety reasons. That's a fine step but not possible when you listen to the graphics card manufacturers. They ask for up to 30 amps from a single 12V rail which would make every OCP kick in if reached since they lie at around 24 amps. The result would be a shut-down of the PC while running the actual application. With a single 12V rail Silverstone went in another direction. If you have enough power to supply every component in the PC from a single rail, there would never be any problem since the PSU is regulating all the power drawn from just one source.

This might be a valid way to design a power supply, but, even though we don't know what it is, Intel probably had a reason for designing the specifications around a 20 amp per 12V rail limit. Silverstone backs up their design choice by stating that there is no application which could force this kind of power supply to fail. We have not heard of any problems in the field with a single high current 12V rail, and in our tests we weren't able to provoke this power supply into failing. We will make sure to pay close attention to this during the tests.

Help??.. I'm more confused than ever now

There seems little advantage in having more than one rail as far as I can see and the perceived pwr loss by modular over non-modular PSU's argument was far from conclusive. So where does that leave us??

Again.. yes and no I may just end up going with the O/C weekly sale 650TX Corsair. I don't run anything as exotic as you're doing and going up to 650w will be a 200w leap over what is currently dead. I dunno mate. Things shouldn't be this difficult

I've just read up on John's 620HX Corsair and that has 3 12v rails totalling 50A. It also comes with a 5yr warranty. The 650TX doesn't say what it kicks out off it's single rail but also comes with a 5yr warranty. The 650HX has a single rail rated at 52a, is 85% efficient accross the board (greater than the other 2 and the OCZ) and has a 7yr warranty. However, it aint £50 I've also learned the difference between the HX and TX are the HX are modular and the TX are not. I think I'm talking myself into a Corsair

Yep I am also confused, I thought that bigger was better and an easy decision to make!!! Think I may just stay as is for now....till my head dont hurt anymore

Modular works best Dave, only install as many cables as needed, improves the airflow

I have a Tagan 750 in my FSX box, comes complete with washbag full of spare cables and a pair of black gloves that I'm saving for private moments.
