No No No...... It doesn't in the way you think, be very careful if your thinking sys restore will work for something like this, it won't and that isn't what its designed to do! Back it up properly. What OS are you using? Its very straight forward, I just need to know what your opperating system is. :)

Hi Ben..

If it does.. then it's not part of a default load. I've not seen MS Backup in donkies years :worried:

On the off chance it was part of Add/Remove Windows Components, I've just had a look and it's not there either mate

No, MS Backup is not part of the default load for Windows XP home edition but see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302894 for install instructions.

There are other freeware backup programs available that might be better to use such as Replicator available at http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptreplicator.asp I use that to backup to a USB memory stick but I think you can also use it to backup to any drive.

Hi All.
I have just read the info at ms site, its part of the win xp install disc, but does not install automatically, you have to select it to be installed, this i would have thought, should have been done when i had the computer built for me.
But for some reason it was not installed by them, but i do have the master disc,so i can at least rectify that omision.
Going by the video on the ms site, once installed it is found by clicking on
start\all programes\accessories\system tools, backup utillity is in this group.
Regards alan.

Hi Alan, thats the one. If you puth the CD in, go to add remove programs and then select "Windows Components" it should be selectable in there and will install it from the master CD. We'll stick with MS backup for what we are trying to do here as its very simple and very well documented. If you can try and get it installed then let us know, that would be great. ;-)

Hi Ben.
First of all merry christmas to you,and a happy new.
I have installed the backup utillity from the master disc,it says in a readme that ASR is not supported in home edition of XP,i assume this stands for auto system restore.
I was round at my parents all yesterday, you know what mums are like,if you refuse the invite, they think something is wrong,so to save any agro,i usually except.
I have been testing my fs9 aircraft, sofar the only one not working is the attitude concorde, but i have not tested all of them yet.
Airports and the main fs9 files are not a problem,as i have the cd`s to install these again, but the aircraft are a different ball game,as i have modified some, and also done a lot of repaints, some are freeware, some are payware on cd`s,some are payware downloads, the last ones being the bug in the ointment.
I might just check everything, then trim out the bad aircraft i nolonger wish to have, then move things like zip files, and my repaint files, this should then give a bit more freedom of disc space on my original disc, and then put GMAX on my new drive.
Regards alan.

Do not even think about using system restore as a method of backup. All it does, if it works at all which often is not the case, is back up program files installed before the last restore point, and it relies on the integrity of the existing HD - if you get a HD fault, you are lost. It does not in any way retain data files in the vent of a hard disk fault. You need to copy your files to a separate medium such as CD or a second HD

Hi Alan, ASR is NOT Windows Backup. If you launch windows backup, its fairly self explanitory. Open the program then select what you want to back up (in this case I would sellect the whole FSfolder, i.e. place a check in the Flight Simulator 9 (or Flight Simulator X) folder. This will backup the directory and all of its files and sub folders.

Next you need to select a backup device. In this case we are going to say File. Navigate to your new hard disk and give the file a name like FSbackup.bkp and then tell it to start. It will back everything in the directories selected up to a single backup file on your new hard disk. :)
