Windows updates IE7

My Pc this morning wanted to install IE7 as an update, now I recall someone telling me when they tested the IE7 beta it crashed FS9...anyone tried this latest version??? does it work and is it safe

Strewth Tony.. it want's to do the same here too. I'll ignore it for a fashionable length of time and see what the verdict is

It works, it is safe, but it's very different from IE6. If you are tech savvy, and looking for things like tabbed browsers, better CSS compliance etc then go for it; if you are not I would hold off for a while!

Oh, for those who (like me) mainly use Firefox, version 2 is well worth the download - if only for the ability to reopen tabs you closed by accident!

I installed it last weekend. Didn't like what I saw. I acknowledge that firstly there was the usual OMG nothing's in the right place syndrome but it seemed to have other serious effects too.

Right here goes... I'm an IT Manager by trade so I OUGHT to know what I'm talking about. That said I made the cardinal mistake of carrying out 3 major upgrades at the same time (was in a hurry as usual). When it all went pear-shaped it was therefore very difficult to point the finger at any particular update. Rolling my XP back to a point immediately before the upgrades had surprisingly little effect, although it seemed to have restored correctly, some of the software was obviously still there. I rolled back again to a week before that and all was finally well.

Here's the major problem I experienced. EXTREMELY slow machine operation, even down to 3.5 minutes to open Control Panel.

FS9 performance was nothing short of HORRIBLE. The PC is an Athlon 64 with 4GB RAM, ATI X800 graphics and RAID'd drives to boost performance so it's not a hardware issue.

Although I can't defintely say it was IE7 to blame, I'd be aware of potential problems and ensure you create a restore point first. Don't trust the restore point created automatically by IE7 install.

I use Firefox too - just waiting to see if the extensions I use have been updated for Firefox 2.

Only use IE6 if I have to for Firefox-unfriendly websites, eg those that want to use ActiveX controls :shock: And therein lies one of IE's weaknesses.

Brian,

I would suspect something else has caused the problem, as IE 7 has made no difference to the performance of my home machine.

The only reason I have it installed is to allow me to test website compatibility, as I am aware it is more compliant to CSS standards, although still not completely - I agree with you about the syndrome, it took me three days to find the History!!
