Could you please elaborate on the meaning of life...?

Can I answer this, Dan? This is definitely within my speciality area of evolution, wildlife and philosophy.

The best answers are the simple ones. The purpose of life and of existence is simply biological. Your answer is procreation. The furthering of the species. All living things live simply to procreate. This includes nurturing offspring to independence - a responsibility that varies according to species. This is the only explanation that fits the evidence. What is the most powerful drive in nature? The desire to procreate, be it in man, insect or plant. Evolution has ruthlessly selected the genes in each species (with the exception of man who thinks he has opted out) to create the best possible creation with which to pass on perfection.

Impala - a breed of Southern African antelope - are a good example. A breeding herd consists of a dominant male and up to 50 females. Sub males will live in a bachelor herd and will be making constant attempts to mate with one of the herd females. The strongest will be aiming higher and will be challenging the dominant male for the herd. The dominant male will therefore spend all his time mating and fighting and will neither sleep or feed. He will be killed or ousted within three weeks by a stronger challenger who will then suffer the same fate. Only the very strongest males will pass on their genes. You will very rarely see an imperfect impala. The old, weak, disabled, infirm or simply knackered will have been picked off by lion or hyena within two nights and will not be passing on any imperfect genes. They are virtually all perfect.

We also are simply mammals - albeit with a brain. But our biological traits are the ones to listen to. The only 'meaning of life' that makes any sense is to procreate and succesfully bring your offspring to a point where they will do the same. The best thing you can do for yourself and the World is to give your kids a bloody good childhood. That's the only thing that will give you satisfaction and make your life worthwhile.
