What a parking job!

Post by mayagrafix »

Found this on another site. Submited by Jim McCrosson. If normally you cared little for ATC types, here is something to throw at them next time they sound off with the sarcasm:

Image

"Here is a picture of a GR-1 that had a disagreement with an approach barrier. Even though the pilot was following instructions, someone in the tower thought it was a good idea to raise the barrier as the aircraft approached and failed to tell the pilot. He was doing touch and goes that night. He tried to pull out using ABs, but all he did was pull more of the cable out. When he was done, all the cable was pulled out, the web barrier (MA1-A) was ripped to shreds, and the GR-1 was slammed into the ground. The pilot and GIB both punched out. The pilot sustained a broken back and the GIB had two broken legs. They were sent back the UK. Big, big hoopla was started when the Brit Commander came out to the crash site.

Well that is a pretty unique event! I'm trying to think of anything similar. It goes to show in aviation if it can happen it absolutely will!

Quite worrying (but I suppose not entirely unexpected) where the fuselage has failed there, I guess, especially for the back seater, that ejecting was the only viable option in this case (even though it carries risks in itself)?

Very lucky that it was not a fatality. Hope the crew make a speedy recovery.

Spooky. I was just reading yesterday of a Javelin doing the same thing years ago. ATC had switched the runway but forgotten to switch the barrier.

Best wishes
