I remeber a PAN AM Stratocruiser having to ditch in the Pacific, I think it was the Pacific

It found a boat and ditched alongside...........if you can stay up for a bit that would be an option.

Obviously if the aircraft is damaged as props and even whole engines used to come off you might just have to put it down and take a chance.

Not sure Leif....I know it landed intact and at least intially didn't sink.

If there are no holes punched in it and the doors are shut....being and airtight pressure fuse it would in therory not sink, not for a long while.

Just to make things clear about the BA 747-436, the emergency resulted from the necessary FL being unavaliable, and the routeing then being less than ideal. The AAIB report is quite an interesting read, and makes clear the philosophy behind multi-engine ops compared with that behind ETOPS

Last year on a flight to the Dominican Republic we suffered some of the most violent turbulence I have ever known. I watched as the Cabin crew went white!
Eddie, if the cabin crew went white.......Hate to think of what colour the pilots were left in!!!
