WW2 Standalone sim?

Hi Chaps,

Can anybody recommend an excellent stand alone WW2 flgith sim? I have really started to get into that era of flying, but find that Microsoft don't represent dog fighting ai that well.

I just fancy jumping into a Spit, heading for France and taking down a number of German bombers.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am mainly looking for Battle of Britain etc and nothing American or in the Pacific.

Although not totally "standalone", I recommend Aces High, an online
WWII flight sim. The monthly subscription fee is nominal, considering
that it gives you the ability to hop into a variety of WWII aircraft and
do battle with 200-300 folks from "flying" from various parts of the globe.
It does have an offline mode as well as a head-to-head mode that is

free.

As to your desire to "jumping into a Spit, heading for France ", that's exactly
what I'll be doing for 4 Saturdays, starting on Sep. 23rd, as we do
the Battle of Britain scenario!

I gave up "standalone" sims completely back in 1992 when I discovered
the world of online air combat. I've only re-entered the standalone realm
with FS2004 a couple of years ago.

There is a new Battle of Britain sim in the pipeline, by Oleg Maddox ( of IL2 and Forgotten Battles fame/infamy). I've seen some of the models and it looks terrific.

In the meantime, Forgotten Battles is the only WW2 sim I really know anything about, and often fly with an on-line squadron in some epic multiplayer air battles. Its cheap as chips at the moment, too.

Sorry to use bad language, but is CFS 3 so bad? The VERY active community are constantly working on improvements (a nice Gladiator has recently been released) and it is now (or will shortly be) possible to cover WW II all the way from the Spanish Civil War right through to the end. Standalone freeware 'expansions' cover the Korean War, the first World War and (soon) the Mediterranean theatre.

Well after searching in the shops with no joy and deciding not to buy off the net, with prices from £9.99 plus P+P and no documentary disk I decided to give up my search for BoB2. That was until I went into a shop in town looking for a game console, and I found it for £1.99 including the extra disk.

My verdict great, except I can't dog fight to save my life. I just don't seem to be able to follow enemy aircraft and keep up with them.

Ah well, it was only cheap, so if I don't use it much then nothing is lost.

The community are brilliant and have done everything they can with it, but the original Microsoft offering was pretty poor. It's just a shame that they didn't have a better platform for add-ons like OFF as the results probably would have been even more spectacular.
