Me thinks the management (and or community) is maybe a bit too quick to editorialize, but I will give it another try.
The Nimrod that went down recently (same as the Sea of Canada 1995 accident) are DH.106 Comet conversions. Considering the ill fated history of the original Comet (metal fatigue) is it possible that the updated bird is suffering from other design flaws?
Both recent crashes are categorized as "accidents" (no missiles, air attack or pilot error). Even with all the upgrades and modern know how the aircraft is still prone to loss of flight syndrome.
I am aware that everything arabian is a touchy subject but I am curious about this Phoenix aircraft given a second chance to fly again since it is one of my fav AC.
BTW: Al Jazera is not my favorite source of info either but thats what came up in a Google search and we should not be so intolerant of others. :-({|=
One less Comet

I locked the thread because there was already one running
As to the Al jazeera there was nothing wrong with that until you go to the bottom and read the comments made.
Those we the type of comments and debate that has no place on this forum.
That is why I removed the link.
If you want to comment on the loss of the Nimrod go to the existing thread.
There is no point in two threads running.

I made the comment about Al Jazeera as I do not believe it to be a trustworthy source, given that it is often used as the soapbox for Islamic fundamentalism. Given the fact that there were 14 British fatalities, I thought it was inappropriate that any news source that might be in any way 'celebrating' the loss should be posted. I am not a moderator, but it was something I felt strongly enough about that I felt obliged to point this out. Nothing personal against you Maya or Garry.
As to the origins of the airframe, whilst it may be an interesting fact, if it is the case that this was one of the converted airframes, yes they are old, but I think all the design flaws of the Comet were well and truely eliminated by the model that this was based on was made. The RAF of course maintains its aircraft to high standards and until some more information comes about about what the circumstances were that lead to this accident, I think any speculation as to the cause would just be a wild guess.

I know I was going out on a lim with that A-J link but I glanzed thru it before and found no outright spin on the content. I also expected it to contain a slanted version of the facts but it turned out to be pretty straiht forward reporting from the wires. No offense taken
As to your thoughts on the airframe, I concur but will speculate further at the Why? thread as per Moderator's previous instruction.
