Saab Gripen - Empire Test Pilots' School

Post by Reheat »

Hi Guys,

Not British (apart from a few of the systems) and not classic but the scheme has heritage!

I saw this on static display at Farnborough earlier last month and wanted to do it there so with the briliant help of Andy Nott my first repaint was born!

A relatively simple scheme but the hardest part was cutting out that damn logo!

This was done purely for my own enjoyment, if anybody else would like to give her a spin then download should be at flightsim.com shortly. However she is also at http://www.repaints.here.ws as of now!

It is for the Thinus Pretorius model and that is required as a seperate download (it is a big one so I didn't include it in the pack) and can be got from all the major sites.

Here is the aircraft I was trying to replicate

Many thanks for looking!

Alex, just noticed, it should be a twin seater :wink:

However the textures work almost perfectly (you get a blue canopy - this cant be fixed, unless you remove the blue spine too) on the twin seater.

Just use this cfg

[fltsim.X]
title=Saab Gripen ETPS
sim=Gripen
model=1
panel=
sound=
texture=ETPS
kb_reference=Specifications
kb_checklists=CHECKLIST
ui_manufacturer=SAAB
ui_type=Gripen
ui_variation=ETPS
atc_heavy=0
atc_id=
atc_airline=ETPS
atc_flight_number=
description=Aircraft, Panel, Sounds and FDE by Thinus Pretorius. ETPS Repaint by Alex Barrett - [email protected]

Well how very interesting! I didn't even know Mr Pretorius had done a twin seater!

The model I am using is actually one linked to me by Thinus himself on the release day, I must have missed an update!

Will play with the two seater tomorrow!

Thanks for the HU Andy!

I actually started work on this repaint a few months back but got angry with the mixed up mapping (the blue cockpit/removal of the blue spine wound me up) so binned it for the two seater and finished the repaint for the Ito Gripen instead. I'll upload it shortly.

Is the twin-holer canopy that much different from the single seat?? That model just doesn't look right (not your fault of course Alex). The blue on the ETPS aircraft looks very much like Navy blue too.. somewhat darker than depicted in the repaint.
Probably not a good choice for a first repaint Alex but 10 out of 10 for having a go at it :wink:

Neither of the Gripen models available at the moment are quite right unfortunately. :sad:

Dave,

The blue was changed about 5 times before I settled on that one. As was the gold!

In the end I used a colour match from the many photographs taken at Farnborough to come up with the one used.

As I said Its my first ever repaint and I never expected it to be up to CBFS standards, I just wanted to do it for the enjoyment and to learn the skills! If someone else likes it, then thats great, but not of consequence in this case. :wink:

Perhaps the next one will be a little more serious, a challenge set by Mr Nott The Hawk ATJ. Trying to help him bring his "to do" list down to the tune of 1.

We'll see how that goes tonight once I've re-tweaked the Gripen. Just out of interest how is the Ito Gripen shape-wise? the only thing about the Pretorius model is the canopy shape.
