Helicopters in MSFS

Post by Paul K »

Wasn't sure which forum to post this, so as its CBFS...Bristol Belvedere!

Anyway, helicopters; how the heck to you fly them ? :k:

I've tried many times, but after a few moments of barely controlled hovering I whizz off where I don't want to go and end up lying on my side.
I understand the controls and what the cyclic, collective and tail rotor do, I just can't keep the damned thing upright and stationary in the hover-which I need to do when landing and taking off.

So whats the secret ? Anybody having the same problems as me ? Are there any sites or add-ons that would help ? I really would like to get to grips with them, because it's an aspect of FS thats a bit inaccessible at the moment.

Thanks as always.

While you're there, download the "training HUD" or "HeliHUD" by Steve Hanley. Make heli flying so much easier.

First make sure you have a good model your flying
(flight dynamics)
it just takes lots of practice
tiny movements and patience
one thing about hovering above the ground is the rotors
that push you up
are pushing the air from under the helo holding it above the ground.
in other words it creates a hole in the air the helo falls into
I'm sure a real helo pilot will give a better lesson on that
I learned by reading and practice

I really like this one
maybe others have another suggestion....

Thanks a lot guys. That Hovercontrol site looks great, and I have now got the Training HUD as advised. Haven't installed it yet, but I'll do that when I get back from Scotland next weekend and let you know how I get on. From the sreenshot, it looks very helpful.

Airboatr, are the default FS helicopters worth flying, or should I download some different ones ?

Anyway, thanks again all for the info.

Enough said, mate.

Anyway, I'll look through Avsim next weekend and grab some from that list. Cheers!

EDIT: By the way, what are Jordan Moore's creations like ? I see his name crop up all the time in connection with FS helicopters

No need to look through Avsim, just go to Hovercontrol.com and you can d/l all the helos you'll ever need from there - all free!

Jordan Moore is the creator and owner of hovercontrol.com and all his models are designed to a very high standard. I would suggest you try his Huey as a starting pointas it's relatively easy to fly.

Also, try their helicopter training programme. There a a number of instructors who will help you get the basics of flying and then take you on to more advanced stuff when you are ready for it. All together, a really worthwhile site for anything helicopter related.
Wherever you go, there you are.

Hi,
After many attempts I've finally got to grips with helos.
From an article on the Hover control site:

1)All sensitivities to maximum
2)Very small (if any) null zone
3)all realism settings to maximum EXEPT general realism, backed off
ONE MOUSE CLICK only.

Worked for me like a dream.

Oh and one last personal tip....
Back of the crash tolerance a lot till you get the hang of it, you'll know
instinctively when you've hit the ground too hard.
Then increase it gradually to force yourself to get better.

Hope this helps
Grum
