Tangmere under threat

Post by TobyV »

According to this site and a thread on another forum, the remaining areas of RAF Tangmere are now under threat of demolition

Since Trev isnt here much any more, guess I am the most local person to Tangmere.

Hmmm... looks like the news has rendered everyone speechless, Toby.

Looks like it Pete!

Not sure exactly whats left, three hangars, an apron and the control tower that I am aware of. The hangars would be useful for exhibit storage and it'd be a shame to lose the tower

I'm 16.74 miles away according to the AA  . Not sure exactly where you live but I assumed somewhere around the Portsmouth area or slightly west of there?

That's about it apart from the museum, part of which is housed in an original airfield building and some bits of the peri track. Did I mention that I'm on the museum staff now? I'll see what I can find out.

Peter and TobyV

Toby, if what you are saying is correct in that the remaining area of Tangmere is to close and bearing the historical importance that this Station has is there any chance that the local authority i.e. County Council would back a scheme to have the remaining part of Tangmere listed as a place of 'Historical Importance'? I believe that RAF Scampton has received such status and therefore is 'protected'.

Although I have never been to the museum. apart from visiting the website, the area appears from photographs, ripe for development for the greedy!!

Having said that, surely the site, or what remains of it, could be preserved as it holds a great deal of history not only relating to the dark days of 1940 and beyond but also to the history of jet aviation itself......

1946 Grp. Capt. Donaldson broke record at 616 mph in a Gloster Meteor

1953 Sqn. Ldr. Neville Duke broke record at 727 mph in Hawker Hunter WB188.

I am sure that there is more but feel that I have said my bit.

Regards Nigel.

The fact the perimeter seems to already be surrounded by new housing would suggest to me that John "I have should have been sacked ages ago" Prescott is probably outside the gates revving his JCB already :curse:

In past experiences, I think trying to slap preservation orders or listings on buildings about to be demolished doesnt seem to work. I very much doubt the hangars would be candidates anyway since they'e post war and wouldnt look out of place at a modern airfield. The control tower might be a candidate though

Tangmere

Hi Guys,
Why is it every time I pop back,Tangmere is on the menu?
The tower was a bog standard build, ground floor, Ground Radio Section,
first floor SATCOs Office,Office,Bog,and the Approach Control, top floor,Visual Control.Having worked there for two and a half years,I remember it well, but its now just a shell. The cost of trying to return it to any semblance of its former state ,is in my estimation far beyond the Museums resources, even if you could find the bits and pieces.Secondly its distanced from the Museum by about a mile, which poses all sorts of security, management problems and thirdly development will undoubtably take place, access could prove to be another obstacle. If one could retain a refurbished building, looking out over the old airfield, maybe, but stuck in the middle of a housing estate or or more likely from what is there now, an industrial complex,it would be a millstone around the Museums financial neck.Sorry guys in my opinion its a non starter, especially as the museums nicely situated and seems to be doing quite well. It was the period, the aircraft and the people who flew and serviced them who contributed to Tangmeres place in the history books, this is well portrayed
by the present displays in the Museum, again in my opinion
Reguards to all

Applications are:

06/02941/OUT - Outline application - Redevelopment of site for housing including details of proposed access. Received 07.07.2006.

06/03377/FUL - Erection of 117 dwellings together with access, car parking, open space and landscaping.

The second one hasnt been processed yet, but should be available to view soon.

I have to agree with Chris on this one. If we tried to make a special case for preserving every ww2 base that has been closed in recent years, we'd be up to our eyeballs in them.
Coltishall is a prime example. What happened to Hornchurch.........??? Housing, that's what.

Council tax and insurance alone would run into millions, that's before you start calculating building maintenance. A lot of the buildings have a high proportion of asbestos in them.

I must say that I would like to see maybe a couple of airfields preserved, and used for military aircraft preservation, but with escallating costs, I don't think we'll see it happen.
