Black Widow

Tried out Ito San's P61B Black Widow. Great eye candy, nice aircraft. The only problem I found with it is it rolls like Patty Wagstaff's Extra 500 on steroids.

Iâ€™ll definitely be adding this one to my hanger as Iâ€™ve always liked the look of the Black Widow. Also, the rather odd looking the control surfaces which seem to be a consistent feature of Kazunori Itoâ€™s aircraft (itâ€™s akin to handwriting) donâ€™t look to be quite as apparent on this model.

Iâ€™ve often thought that design or look of aircraft for Flight Sim is similar to handwriting, in that itâ€™s quite possible to tell who the designer is just by looking at the model. Or maybe itâ€™s just me. :redface:

While the roll rate is a bit high, my understanding is that it's not extremely so from guys who flew it. The P-61 we must remember is credited with shooting down several Zeros during the DAYTIME in WWII and was always considered to be a superior aircraft in terms of maneuverability than most of the Italian Air Force and many German aircraft as well. While large, Jack Northrop knew how to use aerodynamics to its best.

From that statement one is left to deduce that the air file reflects when Mr Northrop was smaller

I am not disagreeing with Chris as everything I have read about the P-61 says it was very maneuverable for its size. But allied tactics used to defeat the Zero relied more on higher speed than anything else. Come in fast, hit the target and then let your speed carry you out of the area and away from the target. Try to maneuver with it in a dogfight and any allied fighter of the time would loose. Using those sorts of tactics and some luck an experienced P-61 pilot could defeat the replacement zero pilots it was facing near the end of the war.

Hiya Guys

Dont want to horn in or anything - but has anyone looked out along the
wing when you have full aileron deflection ??? If ItoSan haas done his homework (which Im sure he has) You will find the ailerons are spoiler assisted, hence BlackJacks 20 ton behemoths quite phenomal rate of roll
He was very very innovative - and the old boy actually lived to see his
dream ALMOST come to fruition
