To Cache or not to Cache

The cache is not an area I am familiar with.

I see that there is a check box in FS in regard to the cache.

What is it, and should we use it?

Will it improve texture load time?

As you can see when it comes to technical aspects of the sim setup I am a complete novice.

Also, do we need the scenery slider to be on extremely dense to see everything, or does very dense do the same, especially in respect of UK2000 airports?

Cache as in "Cache this scenery" as seen in the scenery library?

I leave it set to "use this scenery directly" as I find it faster.

The more dense it is, the more buildings you see.

I just thought that maybe there wasn't much difference between Very Dense and Extremely Dense.

I was hoping that the cache would improve texture loading times. Any idea what does?

I just leave mine on normal as I find the sh!t graphics engine slows everything down to much with anything else.

I'm glad they're using the same graphics engine in FSX..... I wouldn't want a smooth game after 6 years of stutters

I think the cache setting loads the scenery into the system memory rather than reading it from the hard drive as it goes. I find it stutters more as if it couldn't stutter enough.

Hi,

I remember asking this on another forum some time ago. Apparently the cache is intended for use if you don't have a full install, i.e. you did a custom install at the start and left scenery on the CDs. You could load the scenery data into the memory cache to fly, but then it was lost after quitting the sim.

If you have a complete install with all scenery files on the hard drive you just ignore the feature.

I don't think you can. Th best thing you could possibly do is install FS on a seperate hard drive to Windows (a modern fast drive of course).

Degsy is correct on scenery cache Jetty.. ignore it if you have a full install

Btw.. don't you mean you want to decrease scenery load times?? If you want to increase it.. just install all 4 UKVFRPhoto areas, make an appointment for a haircut and by the time it's loaded.. you'll have gone from baldy to longhaired yob so your hat won't fit!

The simplest way to short loading times is to buy a dual processor server with about 5 gig of ram. :dance:

Other than that you try all the cheap options - close everything else down on the PC and use fsautostart to defrag the ram that you do have. :sad:
