A fan has to be able to contain a single blade failure. To actually be able to contain failures like this one, the casing would be so thick and heavy it would become unviable as an aero engine.
Ben, never heard that, did hear once that RR weren't as happy with their engine reliability as they might be, but I cant actually bring to mind any accident culminating in a hull loss that was initiated by the failure of a RR engine.... that said, what engines were on G-ARWE?

They were conways...
PROBABLE CAUSE: "The accident resulted from an omission to close the fuel shut off valve when No. 2 engine caught fire following the failure of its No. 5 low pressure compressor wheel. The failure of the wheel was due to fatigue."
But you could argue human error resulted in the fatalities....
Guess somebody was telling me porkie pies all those years ago.

Darts have also sent bits into cabins..........in one case on a Continental Viscount, killing a passenger.
Also the prototype Herald was lost in an inflight fire caused by engine disintegration.
Not forgetting HS.748 G-OJEM at Stansted either with a fire caused by the failure of the HP

Given the incredible temperatures many of these parts operate at and the internal stresses generated by their high speed rotation (and the fact that the elastic modulus of the material is reduced by said temperatures), its almost a miracle that this doesnt happen everytime you try to run the engine, if you see what I mean!?

Not only that.......TobyVickers wrote:Given the incredible temperatures many of these parts operate at and the internal stresses generated by their high speed rotation (and the fact that the elastic modulus of the material is reduced by said temperatures), its almost a miracle that this doesnt happen everytime you try to run the engine, if you see what I mean!?
You'd think the engine spins so fast it would break eh!
