Vintage routes needed for the DH89 Rapide

I have some info for the RAS setup but it's difficult to tell which aircraft actually flew the routes. An example given earlier of doing the St.Just/Scilly run was (from what I've found) been done by the DH Dragons and not the Rapide :roll:

I'll keep digging but a little help would be much appreciated :wink:

Channel used Rapides on

Ipwich-Southend feeder route

Rochester Southend feeder routh

Southend Jersey
Southend Guernsey
Southend-Shoreham-Jersey

1957 saw a Rapide based at Portsmouth (G-AKRN) to fly to Jersey and Guernsey and any others in support of two Doves also based.

The other Rapide at the time (G-AEMH) remained Southend based.

Theyere was also in the earlier days Southend-Ostend, Southend-Rotterdam and Southend-Amsterdam

Jersey Airlines used the type on services like

Guernsey-Jersey
Guernsey-Alderney
Jersey-Alderney
Guernsey Southampton
Guernsey-Croydon
Jersey-Southampton.
Jeesey St.Breuic
Jersey-Dinard

From the CI to Exeter/Paris/Rennes/Cherbourg probably saw the type but I have no proof.......Charters could put them virtually anywhere.

I am afraid I cannot remember who ran the services, although I think Jersey Airways were involved, but there were routes from Liverpool to Isle of Man both before and after WWII up to about 1953, and from Liverpool to Channel Islands from about 1946 to 1953. The IOM route may have continued to Belfast but I am not sure about this

Cambrian used Rapides to Jersey from Cardiff and maybe they went to Liverpool as well

Railway Air Services 1934 fares:

Soton-Brum sgl 35/- Rtn 65/-
Soton-Cowes sgl 5/- Rtn 10/-
Soton-Glasgow sgl 125/- Rtn 215/-

Same source also has departure and arrival times for these routes (using a DH84 Dragon)

Well, well. I'd better strap a GPS on then :lol:

I have that info too Toby so there is scope to manoeuvre.. even if some of the flights were done by the Dragon and DH86.

The Scilly Isles/St Just run appeared to be for newspapers mainly so I can't see much revenue being made on that little tinker.

Dave if you want to try the route it's not a problem. FlyNET will will give you as many pax/payload as you can carry. Fuel burn should be low so you may be surprised. I can think of nothing better than to potter around down there on a nice summer's day. Looking at some of the airports/airfields, if they are not in FS9, are there freeware versions for everyone? I can think of Ipswich and Portsmouth for starters. If there is scenery out there then we can add the airports to the database as we have with Islay and Benbecula which were in fs9 but not on FlyNET database. If no scenery available then you will have to pick closest airport or not fly the route.

Hi John,

You're not wrong on the fuelburn mate. She burns a meagre 10.5gph in the cruise so more often than not, taking off at MTOW is not an option. Taking up the excess with baggage makes her like a flying haystack which isn't so bad in the air but makes landing 'pitter-patter' style something of a fine art and requires most of the runway!! :lol:

I have a full list of all the airports used by RAS over the 30's and 40's and as you've realised, many are not duplicated in the sim. There seems to be enough to get our teeth into and with the jollies over the channel.. I can see no better way to get there.. oh, other than in a Dove perhaps! :lol:

BEA used the dh89 for there scotish island routes, nothing else would get into the highlands and islands, except the dc3.
