The gear arrangement isn't the issue Felix....it's having those 'other' engines fitted that causes the twitching.....

I think it's just a classic case of the Yanks wanting to put a bigger lump into something.. or perhaps a 'known quantity' as the Lycoming IO-720 was no more powerful than the GQ 70Mk3 at 400hp. The Riley conversions were a lot more than fitting new engines though. The flightdeck was rebuilt, the wings were flush riveted, an airstair door was fitted and the conventional fin and rudder were binned in favour of a swept assembly. There appears to have been no 'real' advantage (performance wise) in doing any of this over the standard Dove
