Short aviation Ghost story related by my father while stationed at
Loch Erne on PBYs in Dec 1944
Apparently a PBY returning from patrol missed the loch and struck high ground NE of Innaskillin (Gublusk) killing all on board - the aircraft wreckage included some very sensitive radar gear so a 5 ton truck and
half a dozen airman were despatched from Killadees to guard the wreackage until technicians arrived in the am to remove the radar gear.
My father being the senior member in the group climbed in the back of
truck to take a snooze - at about 1am he was woken by an ashen faced
airman who said he had to come and see what was going on - he jumped out of the truck and by the weak moonlight was able to see the burnt out wreckage of the PBY and all six members of the crew standing together
in the midst of it singing "Silent Night" - this was witnessed by all 6 airman.
My father said there was suddenly the most incredible noise like a wolf
howling and the crew vanished - the reasoning being - the noise was
a Banshee come to take the crew home. The old man was something
of a romantic - but over the years that story never failed to make the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.
