(edit: I suspect there will be a plethora of WWII fighter aircraft that will qualify to lay claim to this achievement...many no doubt were unaware of the actual moment due to the simplistic instruments carried at the time)

Hi Chaps

Well, this is a very informed forum!

Without giving to much away (for now at least!)................

Well done Gordon (Anzaq), Pete (Motormouse) and Peter Mcleland

As far as I know - the FIRST British aircraft to exceed the speed of sound was the DH108 on the 6th September 1948 when it achieved Mach 1.04.

Quite an amazing performance at the time.............

My 2nd and third are the same as Peter has already listed (ie DH110 and Hunter), although I think that the DH110 did it in 1952 just a couple of months before the Hunter.
