Canberra B.(I)8 repaints in progress (VX185 protoype)

Post by nazca_steve »

Hello all,

I've started work on the VX185 prototype for Paul Foster's B.(I)8 Canberra, but if anyone has photos or reference for her, I'd much appreciate it. Specifically I'm looking for 'don't walk' lines and such for her upper-wing surfaces. Any other feedback is also welcome.

I have to say, with Kevin's B.2 FDE applied, this thing is a beauty to fly. Why is it that black planes look so damned good? Sexy is the word...
Oh, but I have to ask, has anyone else had trouble getting the bomb bay doors open? I tried the extend/retract Concorde nose trick but no luck...maybe it doesn't work on the 'clean' model but only the Nuclear one? Anyone?

Cheers all,

Steve

Andy G, given a few more tweaks, I should have the 'clean' paintkit ready to go pretty soon.

Thanks Steve. The info I'm scanning for you has details on "Don't Walk" lines and other stencilling; I found some more info last night which I'm adding to it.

Something about those all-black aircraft whisper "Top Secret" in your ears.

Steve,

The only slightly useful comment I can make is to quote from the caption to a photo of VX185 in the Putnam 'English Electric Aircraft' book, which mentions '.... the remarkably high-gloss black overall finish'.

'High-gloss' it is.

I don't really get black paints, nice as they are. They're painted that way to camoflauge them in the night sky, yet they're still lit up like a christmas tree with nav lights, etc!!!

Thanks for the gloss-black notes, Kevin, I will indeed try to make the finish a little glossier. To be honest I'm not really sure why the textures appear so matte or dull on this model; with the B.2 they were much more glossy. Very odd, but a challenge nonetheless.

Maybe Andy G can shed some light on it when he attacks repaints in full!

Is this the paint scheme on the canberra that Air Atlantique just acquired from the RAF? It's painted in the livery of the prototype apparently.

er, no, that one would be a glossy blue T4 masquerading as the prototype A1.
