Yes, crows are smart birds, Simon.
The photo is actually an Australian Magpie, which has been voted favourite native bird at least once recently; they mainly feed on insects and worms.
What often get called "Crows" here are Australian Ravens. They have a similar reputation as English Magpies, for raiding nests and killing smaller birds and their young.

What a fine lookin "berb".
Got a little history while on the south side of the country while visiting family. While eating some snack I started feeding some crows in a plaza ... They started following me, a big flock. My cousin's friends were mesmerized looking at the scene. Got some "protection" for almost an hour after that.
