Yep, Nigel - go with Charlie Bravo. He posted some good advice for me when I was ordering my new PC. Mind you, it's now Monday afternoon and you'll be down the computer repair shop at the moment, shouting " It's going to cost HOW much ??? "

Yes Paul, I did venture down to the computer shop, then home waiting for the phone to ring and when it did, I answered. It was not what I thought it was the Graphic Card, instead it was more simple and less costly, my 2 memory sticks failed!!

Boy, was that a relief and there were all of you writing out your thoughts and views regarding an upgrade that needs not happen until next year. I am soooo sorry and very embarrassed now, next time if anything goes wrong I will keep my quiet until the verdict has been given. However, your posts will not go forgotten as I have printed them out for when I am in a position to upgrade.
I briefly spoke to the chap who did my computer and told him I will be looking to upgrade next year (as I may use them again) however, when I mentioned I was looking to go to AMD as my upgrade he said that he has had a number of problems with them coming in for repairs.

Just out of curiosity looking at Scan from whom I bought my current PC six years ago, they sell bundles and wonder if this could be one way to upgrade however, I just wonder what else would be needed, only a thought as it will be around six months before diving in at the deep end!!

If you really feel up to it what do you think?
Many thanks to all.
Regards
Nigel.

Re: Urgent advice - Upgrade on computer
It's really not that difficult to build your own these days Nigel, most of it is plug and play anyway. If you can build a Lego model you can build a PC!
Knowing what components to buy and which needs to match what is the hard part (motherboard, RAM, GPU, CPU, etc. all need to fit and play nicely together!) but there are lots of people on here who can give you a shopping list then you just order and wait! Once everything arrives plug it all in and power up. Job done!

Besides which, any discussion on upgrades/new build is time well spent, and I've picked up a suggestion or two in this thread. Plus, the money you have saved means you can order MSFS2024. Because of various optimizations and multi-threading, it's going to run better on modest PCs than MSFS2020 does.
Be warned though - it is DX12 only, and needs a healthy internet connection, which I seem to remember you have.

Hi Larry, I can see what you mean regarding do it yourself but the only problem is that I have fumbly fingers, I may yet sit down and watch a few videos but the stumbling block for me is the BIOS, I know you might write that there is very little to do but you have not seen my handiwork at home!!
Paul, I do have a very good connection thankfully, Virgin Media. Just have the internet but if they do get pricey there are competitors near-by and they do offer some good bargains for first time users which I don't think is fair really, get it once and your're netted!!
Babs did want a change from Virgin as the price was going up but when I tried to contact them, it was like knocking on the door of an empty office, no one-replied!!
Got about 18 months left so no worries for the time being.
Regards
Nigel.

Hi Nlgel.
The trick with Virgin, is to thtreaten to leave. I did that and ended up with 1Gbs download and 50 extra TV channels for less than I was paying.

Virgin phones operate the same way in Canada! My wife and daughter have been with them for years and every time they threaten to leave they get a big discount. It's still over priced but as my daughter's fiance lives in the US she needs a plan that gives her lots of access in terms of minutes and texts.GHD wrote: ↑30 Sep 2024, 21:29Hi Nlgel.

I, on the other hand, have one of the cheapest (if not the cheapest) phone plans in Canada but you have to own your own unlocked phone to use the service. I am currently paying $12.50 CDN per month (discounted from $15 CDN for long service) for 250Mb of data at 3G speeds, 100 minutes of Province wide talk and unlimited local and International texts. However, every Christmas they give customers a gift of extra data and minutes and it never expires so I currently have 6GB of unused data and 1,500 minutes of International Long Distance talk time which is more than enough to keep me happy for a long time!

Re: Urgent advice - Upgrade on computer
It took me hours to leave earlier this year. The price had crept up until it was nearly £50 for 300mb. The only way they would discount it was if i took tv and a phone line. Fortunately, i stuck to my guns, got full fibre from Vodafone (via open reach) 500mb for £36.
Ben.
