Well, it's certainly got me beaten but, with 6 days still to go, I think it might be a little too early for more help. I suspect one or two of those 'keen members' you mention may yet crack it.

Yes, Pete, there were some crackers, I see them making their way to the podium now, to receive their badges.

AllanL, Ben (TSR2), DaveG, Mick (woody901)
All of them identified the would-be V-Bomber, the Short S.A.4 Sperrin.
Allan actually worked at the manufacturing plant on special duties, and saw the airframes, so he was onto it pretty quickly
He submitted a nice story, scoring a Bonus Star too.
I hope Allan doesn't mind me sharing "........... Shorts product! They are something of a family favourite as my father blagged a seat on a Sunderland to bring him back to Blighty for leave from India in '45 and also saw the Mayo composite sitting in the Tay when they were testing it.
Then in my life as a consultant I did all the annual government energy and carbon reporting for what was then Bombardier in the Belfast Shorts works for several years. So I have strolled through the works where the two Sperrins were built and eaten in the factory canteen that had pictures round the walls of past Shorts aircraft.
The Sperrin, like the Vickers Valiant, was a backstop venture to provide a nuclear bomber in case the advanced designs of the Vulcan and Victor ran into snags in production. The engine layout is the dead giveaway.
Drifting sideways, the Vulcan was the original stealth bomber. Whenever it went over to America for the annual Red Flag bombing competition the Yanks could not figure out why it had such a small radar cross-section. We didn't know either!"
