For planet killing emissions I think the Cass Mountain Railway in West Virginia takes some beating. I cam across it when trundling round West Virginia in 2013.

AFAIK, Avgas still has lead in it. It's unfortunate that Avgas and Coal are going to get more expensive and harder to get as time goes on but I think they will still be available, but will they be economic for these historic uses, its just can they pay the price.

I have read articles about converting steam trains to use oil, but will the historical purists still want to support them once they are no longer as authentic.

Hi Mike, it was a bit thick, surprised there were no environmentalists around!!

For smoke/mph these Shay engines are in a class of their own!

Allan, when I first watched it and hearing the whistle being blown and of the train approaching I was waiting for it to zoom past!

Then when it appeared I was gob smacked! Why is it that they always blow the whistle (if you can call it that) for so long? It's not as though they are travelling at speed. Just had a thought, could it be to scare off wild animals?

I wonder if they're blowing the whistle just to entertain the rail fans watching the locomotive.

There are some chunky snails on those tracks, but Brian is probably right, the route is now just a tourist attraction. Oddly enough my wife was not keen on buying a souvenir CD of engine soundtracks - or taking a trip on the train, something about wanting to breathe.

Interestingly, the North Yorkshire Steam Railway does not allow smoking on any of their statons
