Could This be the End of Steam Railways?
I sincerely hope not, but coal could be imported from other countries though even that may put the costs up.
I think that steam railways are now even more popular than when they were running back in the fifties and sixties. Wonder whether they could be converted to run on logs of wood!!

Nigel, if they burn logs, there'll be nothing to turn into coal over the next 85 million years, then they won't be able to run steam trains at all.Nigel H-J wrote: ↑05 Jan 2021, 20:40....... Wonder whether they could be converted to run on logs of wood!!

I've seen many steam engines in recent years, and the smell of the smoke seems different to that which I remember from years ago. Different coal?
I like to listen to them when they are in the station. Breathing living souls.

Remember being told ten years ago or so the main threat to warbirds wasn't a shortage of engine parts it would be the lack of the right fuels and lubricants because it wouldn't be cost effective for it to be produced.

Skippy there's also a very real problem with certain POL products we use in aviation being banned because they are now erm, environmentally unsafe.

How about fueling steam locomotives with natural gas. I've seen it done with smaller steam locomotives. I wonder if it'd work on the large ones?

The same problem will befall historic aircraft as fossil fuels give way to electricity.
How much longer will leaded (do Merlins still use leaded?) 100 octane be available?
