The wheel hub had me immediately thinking of the USA (Southern states) so I trawled through lots of images of all sorts of biplanes. Mail plane came to mind but that undercarriage support strut arrangement is quite distinctive and I've not seen it in any images I've looked at to date (apart from yours that is).

Okay, I've looked through possibly hundreds of bi-plane images and I still can't find that combination of undercarriage support and engine arrangement. I think I'm seeing double! I had thought I'd narrowed it down to a manufacturer (WACO) but that turned out to be only one aircraft (the slender wing) and all the rest of it was wrong. I think I give up!

The Meyers OTW Aircraft Company was based in Tecumseh, Michigan, to build Allen Meyers' design for a two seat military trainer.
102 were built between 1936 and 1944. 16 in current use.

Chris, that's not what the book says, though it does have similarities.
That Aerostar has wider, flat nacelles, and the gap between pax windows and cockpit is shorter.
