As to the device being over kill... :dunno: the idea behind the device is to garner attention. And It most certainly does do that.
I'm sure it does, but is it not also robbing the engine of 25% of it's power at the same time?

Kevin

That's what I've been wondering. Maybe the horn happy yo-yo's on the streets today might lay off the horn if they knew it would tax their engine's power. :agree:

It's not really noticable, under normal use. The valve is only open for a few seconds.
It has more of a chortle sound than a whistle though; and it's loudest at speed
https://youtu.be/HzB3aAmj2v0
But it's not like it robs so much power from the engine that you'll get a sensation that your going to go through the windscreen

Dave , that gold star medal is the military volunteer gold star.
In case the missus asked what you are volunteering her up for.. :worried:

AirB , thanks for explanation of the Volunteer medal . Strangely enough the gold and green centre stripes are 31 sqdn colours ....... And
Norwich City football club ; aka The Canaries . '' On the ball city '' [ for those of a certain age from the Eastern Counties ] .
Great vid showing horn in action ; and a not bad sounding of the Doppler principle in action . ....An apparent frequency change as the source moves towards and away from you .
Doppler powers the drift and ground speed dial in the Trident cockpit . And the moving map . And the auto drift shutter on the HSI / DI ...
Seem to remember there were 2 aerials pointing forward and out . And 2 pointing rearwards and out [ 'Janus' priciple ? ] Transmitted on front 2 , bounced off the ground and received on back 2 . Apparent frequency shift measured , 'pooted , and displayed / used . Worked really well on Trid . Calm seas were only thing to fox it ....Not often round Europe .
Our 737-200s were fitted with Doppler , but not so good . Rumour was we went cheap and got helicopter units ...maxed out at 250 kts g/s. No good at 600 .
Brian , thanks for link to Flickr , I'll practice in the dark nights to come .

Nothing intentional on my part, but I'm glad it worked out that way.

I'm not qualified to answer the last question.

The Doppler thing is a interesting subject though... *-)
