France VFR and Others

Post by ChrisHunt »

I recently bought a region of France VFR and also Northern Catelonia VFR (adjacent areas - Languadoc-Roussillon regional). The France VFR scenery includes Mesh, photo textures objects and buildings (not-autogen) with buildings by type and placement more or less where they ought to be. The Spain scenery is mesh and photo textures only. I struggled a bit with my previous video card but the new 1060 6Gb card performs pretty well. The France scenery is very good and includes landmark elements, e.g. wind turbines, water towers and the like as well as the buildings, which helps to bring the whole thing to life rather than just flat photo textures. No trees though. I did find that turning bloom off helped enormously with the scenery look far less washed out and with much less glare. France VFR is recommended. The Spain scenery is okay not nothing out of the ordinary these days.

For real VFR scenery though take a look at this: http://www.orbxsystems.com/forum/topic/ ... simulator/ I may change my mind about ORBX scenery albeit for Aerofly FS2 only.

Hi all, quick addition to my recommendation of France VFR - the regions (with autogen) are not compatible with ORBX. Apparently there's a merge autogen utility, which I downloaded but can't find instructions simple enough to follow so I kept P3D v3 and have all my french stuff on that.

Re AFS2 - I bought Innsbruck for that and first impressions are a bit mixed. It certainly looks the dogs but I feel that the developer went a bit overboard with how many objects he wanted to show so performance is less than stellar. Also, and very odd this, I decided to fly low and slow so picked the Cessna Skyhawk and after a couple of minutes of flight there's an odd graphical glitch that's barely noticeable and the poor old Skyhawk immediately stalls and plummets into the ground with no apparent possibility of recovery despite sufficient airspeed. I've tested the same aircraft elsewhere and frankly it's near vertical and at walking pace (jest) before it will stall and with an immediate recovery so something very odd going on.

Okay, I got to the bottom of the problem. I have an NVidia GTX 1060 6Gb are there are a large number of reports of issues with this card with the NVidia HD sound driver as the potential culprit. Uninstalling the driver only didn't appear to solve the problem so I did a fresh and clean install of NVidia drivers ensuring that the HD sound driver wasn't selected for the reinstallation. This appears to have solved the problem of poor performance and numerous graphical anomolies in FS2 in the Innsbruck area. I was also experiencing PC crashes (freezing forcing a hard reboot and not a crash to desktop) this was happening in FS2, P3D v3 and v4 and all since installing the 1060. So far so good with FS2 and only time will tell with the others.
