105 WIP (COMPLETED)

Post by DaveB »

Been having a look at the paintkit for the RA Spit and decided to have a punt at Seafire F XVII SX336/G-KASX. Lots of detail to do (re-size this.. add that) and I may end up not finishing it. It's the wrong Spitfire for one (SX336 has a bubble canopy and isn't a razorback) and the serial font for the wings is an odd one.. don't have anything close! Still.. it'll do at a distance

Image

Does anyone know what RASSpitXXX_Ext1_Oil_T actually does?? All the paints use one but on many.. it seems to be exactly the same as RASSpit_Ext1_T :dunno:

I think it's used to add an oil effect to the paintwork if you blow the engine. IIRC the model effectively swaps between the normal & oil covered textures .

Nice looking paint Dave. Hope you finish it.

Ahh.. well bugger me!! That makes complete sense Dave. I can't tell you how long I've pondered that very question  Paint Ext1_T then copy it to Ext1_Oil_T for the 'shite.. that's done it' layer. At the moment.. when mine blows up, you don't get too much oil but the explosion blows the markings off the side. Neat effect hey  Knowing this.. I could even have it that when the engine blows up, the aircraft changes colour completely! That'd fool Johnny Foreigner

I'll bet all this info is in the pdf for the paint kit (which as you'll have guessed.. I've not bothered to read as it was too long) :$

Just had a thought.. is the RNHF Sea Fury painted up in it's current colours (also 115 I think)? *-) Must have a look :cpu:

WIP3..

Damn it.. I don't think I can take this much further. I added a dirt layer on the bottom to define the map then added some text to the fuse and now.. CS2 throws an error. The maps won't open in Elements without destroying the groups :wall: I'll try to open map 4 to remove the dirt but there's a fair bit more work needed on map 1 and this is the one which is giving me errors and closing the prog :| Poo, Poo and thrice POO!!

That's a rather handsome paint, Dave. It enhances the Spitfire's elegant shape very nicely. :)

Cheers matey.. I wish it was as elegant to paint! Still.. the PK kicks the shit out of anything AH produce

Incidentally.. the error I get from CS2 refers to Cooltype.dll.. an Adobe dll. Reading around the net.. there are common problems with this.. most of them associated with an Adobe product I don't have! Anyway.. suspecting a link with the small text I added and the beginning of the problems.. I deleted the font (I'd only downloaded it yesterday). The end result is that map ext1_T will now load and I can run up and down the layers to my hearts content. However.. the one thing I can't do is save. CS2 reports that I don't have enough RAM!! :wall: It's full of shit of course. I've run task manager with CS2 open and there's no shortage of RAM and the scratch disc is barely scratched 8) Seems this is not an uncommon problem with CS2.. nor is it uncommon with CS3 or CS4 :wall: Oh.. the memory shortage is being reported by BIB.dll.. yet another Adobe dll!
I've been passed a copy of the RASpit PK 'un-grouped' which works a treat with good-old Elements. However.. all the detail of map1 is locked on that psd so I'm in the process of rebuilding map1 from scratch 8)

Bloody hell Dave, I think I would have deleted CS2 in a fit of rage by now.

I ended up having to remake ext1_T from scratch in Elements using the un-grouped PK donated by Dave Quincey then have a go at some of the saved maps in Elements to make last minute changes. It's not perfect but it's as close as I can be arsed to make it given it's the wrong model. In case there are any interested parties.. you can download it HERE . I hope you have more fun flying it than I had painting it

Even with the blemishes I know about.. I do actually like this paint. I just wish DG had done it
