FS9 on Win7

Post by DaveB »

Hi Chaps..

I need to get FS9 onto my Win7 rig for testing purposes. I've tried installing it once already and despite clicking on 'Run as Administrator'.. the program didn't actually run. I looked in Task Manager and it showed the FS9 folder (on G drive) was running but not the exe (though I dunno how that can be)!! I seem to have the desired permissions on G drive. Anything I'm missing?

Hmm.. a note on Avsim points to a Win7 update killing off the default exe. It doesn't (apparently) kill the no-cd exe. I'll have a go tomorrow (I've already uninstalled it!) doing an install.. a 9.1 update then the no-cd patch and see what pops out :)

Is there a compatibility mode set other than W7?

Hm, not much help from here Dave :( I've got FS9 installed here on my Win7 64 bit setup without any hitches as an administrator. Once in, I just ran the no-cd thingy. Never occurred to me that it might not install.
Cheers

No mate.. me neither. I tried to run it once (as you do) just to check all was well and I got not a lot! Perhaps when I install it again tomorrow.. I'll run the 9.1 update then add the no-cd without running it at all and hope this does the trick. Can't say I've heard of a windows update killing the exe (apparently.. it stops the install verifying with cd4) but I've not tried FS9 on Win7 before. My WinXP is becoming such a cow to even wind up.. I thought this would be a better (more time effective) option. Once the WinXP rig has been up a few times.. while it's slow to start (as WinXP was) it runs ok. I'm just getting intolerant of waiting for 2 or 3 days to pass  It should go like stink if and when it actually works. The OS is on an SSD and FS9 will be on an SSD :)

Are you still connected to internet on this machine & get M$ updates? I've found that putting a CD in the drawer nowadays that it has to read all of the disc before it then wakes up to do anything else, at least with FSX when I've recently been trying to reinstall it. Possibly due to old firmware for the CD player?
Good luck

Hello Mate..

Yes.. the Win7 machine is my current steed and gets important updates. I'll give it another try now I'm back from work and if it doesn't work this time.. I'll have to think again :dunno:

Well.. got it to run.

This time.. rather than let it do it's own thing (insert disc.. click the options and go) I selected open files for viewing, clicked on setup.exe and made it run as Administrator. Cor.. what a mistak'a that was. The install was so slow, I thought I was back on a x4 cd player  Anywho.. a while later, it had installed. On the final install page, I selected 'run now'.. the little twirly thing twirled and nada :wall: Not wanting to go through that crap again, I found and installed the 9.1 patch then added the no-cd exe. Bang on me old cocker  The darned thing starts with a 'are you sure you want to run this program' window which is disappointing but otherwise.. it looks ok ;)

Hi Dave:
My system is set-up very similar to yours, with my exec file on my "C" drive & FS9 operating solely off of my "E" drive. My system crashed last November all because of an update from Microsoft that did not recognized FS9. I ended up removing the updates & eliminated updates being automatically installed on my system. Hope this helps you

 Hi Dave,

This is the same on Win 10. It wouldn't run unless both 9.1 and the 9.1 no cd are in place. Sorry, meant to reply last night and completely forgot.
