JF Tornado Demo Available

Post by ChrisHunt »

Time limited (per flight to 15 mins) but otherwise fully functional model of the JF Tornado GR1. I downloaded this and gave it go. Visually appealing and not too terrible on frame rates but the flight model? This version of the Tornado has an extremely impressive rate of roll, albeit no stores, and leaves the ground like a scalded cat. My biggest problem is that it wallows around like a tugboat in mid-Atlantic at around 200kn, even with full flap deployed - anyone else found this? From my conversations with Tornado flight crew the RoR and the tendency to wallow are not a notable feature of the real aircraft. I must admit after trying the demo I won't be getting this, regardless of frame rates.

Hi Chris,

I created the flight model for the JF Tornado - there is an issue with the flaps which I'm still working through (should resolve your comment re-wallowing, though that's not the primary reason for the alterations).

Max Rate of Roll is documented as being fairly constant over 200kts and in the region of 150 degrees/sec. Although it may be thought to be slower with the wings forwards, it is actually controlled by the CSAS to maintain that rate. The exception (which hasn't been modelled) is with the flaps set to mid / full where roll rate is limited to 40 degrees/sec.

"leaves the ground like a scalded cat" - the take-off run at 26,000kg (pretty much a full load) is only about 5500ft according to the ODM. If you're flying it devoid of stores and just internal fuel, you're looking at roughly 4,500 ft. Again, the flap adjustment will probably lengthen the time it takes to get to this distance.

Cheers,
Paul.

Hi Paul, thanks for the response - good to see one of the developers chipping in. Noted re the wallowing and I look forward to the update on that. Re RoR - I can achieve a RoR in excess of 150 DPS even with wings forward - note that this is without stores. At the moment transition from ground to air is currently rather sudden - jumps of the deck and initial rate of climb is higher than I would expect to see. Give me a shout when you've made the updates and I'll give it another go. Subject perhaps but at the moment it doesn't "feel" right.

Regards,
Chris
