RFA's

Post by DaveB »

Hi Chaps

Got bored with only one RFA in the fleet (taken from the Modern_Royal_Navy_Expansion pack available at SoH and Simviation to name but 2) so I increased the single Rover to cover all 5. I've also had a fiddle with the Flying Stations AI Wessex to add 3 more liveries and added 2 more to the AI Sea King which comes with the payware USS Enterprise. It's the wrong Sea King but it doesn't look too bad for our use. I'll upload sets for all 3 elements IDC :)

Hi Chaps..

Here are the associated files to achieve the above..

RNSeakings

RoverClass

AddonWsx

Now.. you MUST have the SH3 Sea King that comes with the payware SDB Enterprise for the Sea Kings to work. I have set the folder in the zip up with a different name to the US version as I've also changed the start/stop parameters in the sim.cfg. Our models tend to start and stop much faster and leaving the default value meant the Sea King model was never in sync with our ships. It 'is' using the sim.cfg included. Not wanting to change how it behaves with Enterprise.. it seemed better to have a separate folder. Just drop the model folder from your Enterprise Sea King into the new folder. It's the wrong sort of Sea King but it's better than a poke in the eye.

The Rover Class..
I've included the original freeware model with this download and the original paint has been tweaked a little. The pack is 'stand alone' and gives all 5 Rovers.. Green, Grey, Gold, Blue and Black. They're not much to look at but the serve a purpose and now.. you don't have to have the same one everywhere!!

The Wessex 1 paints..
Included in the zip are 4 additional paints for the lovely Wessex that comes with Victorious 64/66 (you need this to get the helicopter.. it is NOT included). Just drop the additional paints into the Wessex_1 folder and add the sim.cfg. This will give you the default Victorious paint, a Dayglo/Blue rescue paint, a Fleet Utility blue/yellow (Glamorgan), a Green RN paint and finally.. a fleet utility 'PO' Portland. I think that's it :)

Any probs.. you know where to get me ;)

Excellent pictures, Dave. Your virtual navy continues to expand. :)

I went aboard an RFA in Plymouth Sound way back, but damned if I can remember her name. I believe she was an ammunition ship, but it was her Doxford engine that I was there to see.

Hmm.. could have been one of a few Paul. Lyness and Stromness were dry stores/ammo.. Resurgent was a dedicated ammo ship.. more recently the Forts.. Fort Grange and Fort Austin carry stores and ammo. The Rovers are more oilers than stores though their flight decks mean they're able to cope with both.

This was her, Dave - RFA Retainer. Blimey, that took some dusting off of the memory cells. She was an armament support ship, rather than an ammunition ship, and was broken up in 1979. I went aboard her around 1975, I think.

Quite an interesting history...

I'd love to have an AI model of her in P3D - maybe coming and going at Plymouth.

Ah yes.. sister ship to Resurgent but not converted to the replenishment role. Doxford diesel; 1 shaft; 6500bhp = 15kts

From Janes Fighting Ships 73-74..
Built by Scotts' Shipbuilding and Engineering Co Ltd, Greenock, and completed in 1951 and 1950 respectively. Retainer was purchased in 1952 and converted into a naval storeship during autumn 1954-April 1955 by Palmers Hebburn Co Ltd, where further conversion was carried out Mar-Aug 1957 to extend her facilities as a stores ship, including the fitting out of holds to carry naval stores, the installation of lifts for stores, the provision of extra cargo handling gear and new bridge wings. Ex Chungking!! :cpu:

Searched for line drawings of this, but found zilch.
If you have any, I could attempt a FSDS 3.5 model, Paul.
FSDS makes for FSX, so possibly might port into P3D, or am I talking through the stern port hole?
Do other FSX ships port over?

Mike, I have been making my first attempts to learn Gmax, and ship models are what I'm going to concentrate on. However, if you can't find plans of the Retainer, I doubt I can either. I've got other detailed plans though, including the battlecruiser HMS Queen Mary ( lost at Jutland ), the torpedo boat destroyer HMS Velox of 1904, a Flower-class corvette and various vintage merchant and fishing boats. Thanks for the offer though.

Sorry for going a bit off topic, Dave.

Great shots of some great ships, there Dave!

Monster formations ... make my 10-12 ship formations look like a few stray corks bobbing around the ocean ...
