Just flight are selling a download version this weekend for £5:99.
Is it any good?
Actually at that price it's worth a punt.

Re: FSX Steam Edition £5:99
G'day John,
I took a punt, used up some buying points and paid them another $3.
Took hours to download, froze at 72% , but I was able to restart from that point, and it finished off OK.
Took a Cessna out of Northolt about 45fps, no untoward signs appeared, except that the aircraft was running wild, even though it said my controls were all OK.
Eventually it came good, and I managed to land elsewhere; may have been Heathrow, as there was a lot of heavy metal about. In the view options, I found that I could choose any of the AI aircraft as the viewpoint. I've never noticed that in FSX, so maybe it's a new feature, or maybe I just missed it.
Went back to FSX (Avgas version) and it started exactly as normal with my default flight and usual fps, varying dependent on what was visible. Controls AOK. Conclusion - it didn't mess up my fsx.cfg or settings.
Interesting diversion. They do say that your add-ons aren't automatically applied. I haven't tested to see if they will run with steam.
Hard to tell whether Colin Bear's previous report about extra speed applies to my set up. Still, he did say low end systems may benefit.

Re: FSX Steam Edition £5:99
Hi Mike
That's interesting as it also took ages to download and that's with a 38mb speed. However it did run a bit faster in default flight at 45fps. I did change screen resolution and it slowed to 42fps.
Compared to original FSX it was marginally faster. Will try to load Horizon scenery and see what difference that makes.
It does seem to load faster, will time it next time.
I was able to get it for £4:19 as I had a few points.

No, it's OK, I'm still in front, not likely to spend my points any other way in the near future.

Thanks, George, others may benefit.
Haven't got the bill for the download yet....

Comparison report:
Location; Edmonton Int'l (default scenery)
Aircraft Baron 58 standard instruments.
Cockpit view 0.7 zoom
Sim not paused.
Display settings equal (shadows, ground shadows, traffic, water effects etc)
The Steam scenery wasn't as good as ordinary FSX
FSX Steam Edition 85-89 fps
FSX "Avgas Edition" 89-92 fps

I got it last time it went on sale. It site untouched on my D drive. Took me a while to find it the Steam folk do quite a good job of trying to hide it.
But I found it.

Re: FSX Steam Edition £5:99
So you've never tried it, Alex?
Re: FSX Steam Edition £5:99
I've dabbled, but my real FSX has so many updates and things to make it look pretty that the bare bones FSXSE doesn't look so great. I really bought it for the $5 deal as an insurance in case I have a catastrophic FSXA failure and my CD's don't work. I cannot compare performances as my original FSX is so modified it would not be a fair comparison.
