Loading up a new PC

Now that I've taken delivery of a shiny new PC from PCspecialists I want to load up FS9 and FSX again.

On the old machine they were respectively in D and E drives and I'm planning on doing the same on the new one. Can I load up FSX as a new install on the i7 machine without doing an uninstall on the old steam driven beast?

I'm planning in keeping the old beast as a standby device but steam is not doing silly sales price offers at the moment.

Hi Allan

I'm not exactly sure where you're coming from mate. Do you mean you'll be using the FS HD's out of your old rig in the new one? If that's the case.. I reckon you'll run into trouble because FSX requires a registry entry. There are tools out there to do this but it's likely that other software you have loaded will also require registry entries so you're best off doing a fresh install then dragging bit's you like from the old install into the new one. This is what I did with my current FSX install. First.. I took the precaution of renaming the original install and made the new one the same as the old one.. eg.. old one was Flight Simulator X.. changed it to Flight Simulator XBC then installed the new one as Flight Simulator X. Drive letters were the same so all of my old stuff looked in the same place as the new one.. if that makes sense

What I was half-thinking about was installing new FS9 and FSX base load-ups, hence the concern over whether MS will allow another FSX install from the master disks, in the new D and E drives and then copying over stuff from the old D and E drives. I know that some payware will need files to lurk in the c drive that could be copied over for starters. But I recognise that some stuff will lurk in the registries, so a bit of reloading is inevitable.

The old rig will be left alone, so will probably still be in use for tomorrow, but hopefully without all the junk junior leaves running when I lever him off to let me have a play!

I had to dive out to Staples to get a DVI video card. Seems GTX970s don't stoop to VGA connectors anymore. It's been a while since I got new PC hardware.

If you've installed neither for some time.. they'll fresh install again on your new rig. Only problem is if they're recent installs (like newer than 6months) and then you'll be faced with the inevitable telephone activation. It's quite painless but a little tiring. Have a pen and paper handy to jot down all the characters (of which there are many) OR.. be brave and type them in as they're coming off the phone. I usually do the paper and pen lark

Thanks Dave, I've got FSX gold in and had to faff about getting a directx runtime download from microsoft to get it to run on W7 64. Now getting frame rates in the 200+ range so off to find some meaty scenery to test it out a bit more.

It might even manage some of DMs screamers.
