Re: FSX steam edition
I gave it a try and now I'm hooked.
It runs well in win 8.1, all the orbx scenery installed, just a small problem with object flow that will be soon fixed.
REX 2 plus the new soft clouds look very nice.
AI carriers not working for me at the moment.
It all seems like a very slick operation and some development seems on the cards, I like it.

Re: FSX steam edition
Rob, have you noticed any real increase in frame rates / smoothness ? Pete Dowson, no less, says there is a significant improvement.

Re: FSX steam edition
Paul, things do seem smoother with better framerates, but it is still FSX with all the old shortcomings, its Win 8.1 compatible though.
I have it alongside P3D 2.4 and if I were forced to choose one or the other I think, with the prospect of updates from Steam, P3D would have to go.
Both sims are a long way short of perfection but I think the chances of the Steam outfit getting it right have to be better than LMs.
I’ll keep both I think.

Re: FSX steam edition
Thanks very much for that, Rob. Interesting that given the choice, you would take FSX.SE over P3DV2.4, which is what I am using at the moment. Then again, P3D is computer software being developed by Lockheed Martin - what could possibly go wrong ?

I can see I'm going to have to follow the whole subject very closely for a few weeks.

Blimey now for us here it's back down to CDN$ 5.59 or an 80% discount. It's up and down like a fiddlers elbow. Still not gonna budge me though

No.. I can't see the point either. If support for the DVD version (as in normal activation or via phone) stops.. then yes but at the moment, no

Re: FSX steam edition
I've bought it, "just in case", but not installed. There's still a lot of add-ons that don't support it yet. Quality Wings say they will not support the Steam edition. VRS will support either MS or Steam installations but not both on the same machine.
Lot of confusion out there at the minute.
Does make me wonder if the claims of smoother and higher FPS are simply the fact that it's a fresh installation without all the FPS sucking & high-res add-ons.
Sticking with P3d for now.

Re: FSX steam edition
Well chaps,
I did it yesterday and so far I've added in all of my scenery (replaced the scenery CFG as my scenery is held outside the main FS folders) and pointed the fsx-se.cfg at my aircraft and AI folders. I can see no difference in smoothness at all or frame rates at all. To be fair many of the system DLLs look like they have been recompiled for Steam edition as their size is different from the FSX install, but no performance difference at all. I haven't installed REX etc at this point, and don't think I'll bother for the time being at least.

To be honest.. this is the first thing I thought of tooDoes make me wonder if the claims of smoother and higher FPS are simply the fact that it's a fresh installation without all the FPS sucking & high-res add-ons.

Re: FSX steam edition
For me it came down to, can I afford it or not, HD space that is not £ cost.
I installed on a drive ( not SSD ) with plenty of space and so far haven't regretted it, all my add-ons working just fine and it runs quicker and smoother than P3D.
My system is a bit long in the tooth and doesn't seem to handle the latest LM offering too well also I need FSX installed for FSDS to work.
