FSX Crashing

Oh deary me!! Since having my computer upgraded to i5 and a Nvidia GTX 750 Graphic Card I have found that FSX freezes up then a warning that FSX is not responding and closes. This has occurred when at Heathrow taxiing to R/W and at Liverpool when also taxiing and in just after T/O. In all cases the frames rates have been around 25-35fps so I don't think I am overtaxing the computer, I am only running Orbx scenery with no add-ons i.e. airports etc.

The only thing I can think of is that the OS was re-installed from fresh (running Win7 64bit) and all updates installed so just wondering whether any update somewhere inside is causing a problem? (Clutching at straws here methinks).

Got that fed up with it that I uninstalled FSX completely and re-installed it but the same thing happens so I know it has nothing to do with the way it is installed so have now decided upon re-installing Win7 as soon as I get home from the library and as I am not connected to the internet just run it without any updates as I did before the upgrade and had no problems.

I know any replies are going to be too late to read by the time I return (hopefully on Wednesday) but would like to know whether anyone is aware of any conflicts that Windows upgrades have caused problems with FSX as even when closing MS Word it comes up as saying Word is not responding and will close again this is something that did not happen before.

TBH, I've always been surprised to read on this forum that W7 updates cause problems.
I think I had one in about 4 years, but nothing to crash FS.
Most of their updates are, as you're aware, to fix security issues, owing to the never ending assault on us law abiders.
Because you're not on line, I think that doing what you suggest, using out-of-the-box W7 should work. Good luck.

That's what I thought until I had one then went online to check out possible fixes (having uninstalled the updates first as these (one of them) killed IE)!! These things cause problems the world over after each update mate.. you just have to hold your breath and hope you're not one of them!

Nige.. as you're not internet connected with your system at home, when was it last updated? It may be that a rogue update has killed something but it's difficult to believe an update is only now rearing it's ugly head.. if that makes sense. Depending on how long these issues have been happening and how long ago your last Win7 update was.. you could try doing a restore to before the last update. There's a few more things you could try but I'm still trying to get my head around the update times and when your problems began.

Years ago when a lot of folk were re installing FS.X they were advised to compact the disk, uninstall re compact the disk and to get a clean install.

That was certainly current advice whne I did it...not sure how much is left after original instal and after un install but some were claiming a lot of debris was left behind and could affect the re install.

Dunno , but perhaps someone who does know could comment?

Do you mean 'compact' or defrag? I can't recall anything about compacting a drive since the dark days of Win3 but it's certainly current to defrag your FSX drive after an install.. except of course if you're running it on an SSD. Defragging these is verboten

Are you running a SSD? I had this problem of not only FS9 & FSX freezing but other windows progs also after almost exactly 1 hour after switching on. After about 3 to 4 mins after the freeze it powered down. Looking in the Windows log it only showed the Kernel power loss.
It appeared that my SSD was an old one of my sons about 2 years old, but more importantly it was being written to as a normal HDD & thats what can kill a SSD. Luckily I bought a Samsung 840 EVO that came with its own s/w to reset things to a SSD standard & I was able to clone the old SSD. Now this shut down also happened as I had my main FSX etc Gmax etc on my old HDD, so the SSD was nowhere near full capacity.
Crossing fingers & touching wood, its been OK now for the last 2 weeks.

Hi chaps,
just back for a few minutes as have to go into town so just popped into the library on my way in.

Just did a new install of Win 7 with no updates added, installed FSX then at Liverpool (bless the place) just started ot taxi out in the Cpt Sim 737 and got another crash!! This time I got the message APPCRASH so just assume it means application crash i.e. FSX (amazing how you read things as you get older)

BTW I had de-fragged both the hard drives as run FSX seperately, will have another go and see what problems, if any, materialise and let you know on Saturday when I can next get in.

Just set up graphics card to run on default its settings as before I had it set up to work performance mode to see if that makes any difference as still getting good fps.

May also try to get in later today but not sure.

I had something similar with Win7. Don't let it install inside the program files (x86) folder (i.e.by default). Ideally install on a separate HD but definately as it's own folder i.e. C:\FSX

I've installed mine as such on an external HD and it works a charm.

Hi Nige, Just popped in again quickly before having to go out yet again!!! Thought retirement was exactly that..sit in a comfy chair wearing your fav slippers with a nice steaming mug of tea/coffee with a healthy drop of whiskey thrown in and watch the world go by!! Do you know none of that applies to moi!! Just so much to do and not enough time in the day to do it all

Sorry, turning into a right old grumpy so-and-so anyway, back to the thread......Nige, I do have FSX on a seperate drive, all I can do at this stage is keep using it and try to note where this is all happening i.e. area of flight. One thing I have noticed though is that if I restrict frame rates to say target of 30fps when at Heathrow it goes down to between 9-15fps and appears to struggle but if I keep it unlimited I get between 20 - 30fps with smooth flight.
