I'd make the 250gb drive my OS drive and put FSX (less the photo scenery) on the 120gb one mate. Drive cloning software will work Dave, but I haven't used it recently so not sure what the going rate is for the software on its own.

That would be nice except for one problem.. my FSX folder already exceeds 120gb (over 128gb) and that's without GenX or ES scenery which lives on another drive This is one of the things I was thinking about when I said I didn't know what to do with it Making the 250 my OS drive is looking good though

Mine is about 50GB and that's with about 12GB in my AI folder

just a thought Dave, but how much is in you addon scenery folder in the FSX drive?

I see where you're coming from mate. It's not Addon Scenery that's the problem (1.52gb).. it's my Simobjects folder which sits at a Princely 101gb My aircraft and boats would fill the little 120 (having left sufficient space for it to breathe of course)

You could always shift your simobjects contents to another drive and add a SimObjectPaths entry in fsx.cfg.

At the moment, my OS drive is the 120 SSD which is woefully small. It has, however, got me into the habit of putting anything which 'doesn't belong' onto another drive.. in this case, a SATA2 500gb WD (F). GenX and ES scenery also reside on there. My FSX drive (E) is a SATA3 500gb WD which houses FSX (as it would) plus other FSX derived progs.. ASN, AIBT, AIFP, ADE, FSC, FSXB, ISv2, MCX, REX, SAMM2.. you get the picture There's room on the SATA2(F) to throw my SimObjects should I so desire and of course.. should my current E drive become the 120gb SSD with FSX on.. I'll have IT to hoard stuff. I'm not short of space.. just short of braincells and money

Old subject but I've just replaced my 128GB Crucial SSD as I was getting BSOD's after every hour of use, which if I was Gmaxing meant I lost everything - even the last save as it appears that MOM.exe doesn't do its thing because the BSOD shuts power off before it can save. Checking the fault logs only showed up kernal power problems. The SSD was however an old one my son had used for a couple of years.
Now being a cheapskate, I searched Amazon & found a Samsung 840 EVO 120 GB. This comes with Data migration & Samsung Magician s/w. Luckily I had a hardware module where I can plug in an external SSD so didn't need that bit of hardware that one can also purchase.
Cloning was quick & I swapped the SSD over & lit up successfully.
Now for the interesting bit:
Ran the Magician programme & it gives 3 options for setting up from max performance to max reliability, so I chose max reliability & it gave a list of recommendations which one could modify & then just click on the GO button. One of the comments noted that the original settings was for a HDD which is not good for a SSD as Windows writes (refreshes?) too many times when set up for a HDD.
The guarantee document noted that this model was good for 3 years, but it would depend upon TBW - which means Total Bytes Written & it seems that there is a finite number of writes of bytes that a SSD will take before it gets indigestion.
What I don't know is what parameters (presumably in the BIOS) have been changed to reduce the number of writes.
BTW my SSD only holds the main OS, with the others FS9, FSX, Gmax etc on a 500GB HDD. Presumably the SSD also holds the registry. Gmax of course does an autosave every 10 mins & I have tried to get it to do that to the HDD as it defaults to the C drive!

Sorry for the long explanation, but it might help save some life on your SSD if you changed it in lieu of a HDD.

If the experts out there have any more info then I would be pleased to know. Can one regenerate SSD's for reuse, or is that the end of usefulness except for having a backup that one can clone again?
