RAF Air Defence Radar Museum

Post by gordon-in-aberdeen »

Hello, me again. :hide:

Another place we went to when on holiday in Norfolk last month was the RAF Air Defence Radar Museum in RAF Neatished, near Horning. A very interesting and professional museum showing everything there is about Radar through the years. Not wanting to bore you all with pointless holiday shaps but here's a couple of quick picks here for your interest....

Image
The Cold War room as it was described by the museum's tour guide folks, who were all 1st class folks.
The room was the actual control centre for the south of the UK during much of the Cold War and was preserved largely as it was when the site was closed as an operational building.

One of the Bloodhound Missiles that were based near by, now providing an interesting object outside.

Last of all and very amusing I thought, an interesting little sticker hidden on a heating thermostat behind a door in the building ...

If there's anyone in here who volunteers at the Museum, I'd say many thanks, it was very professionally run with much to keep us interested for a good 4 hours or so.

You can find them at http://www.radarmuseum.co.uk/

Cheers folks, look it up if you're in the area, its a great day out

* little edit there, just increased the size of the sticker so you can see it better *

Oh dear Dave, wasn't my intention
I'm also wondering if this and the Langhan Dome threads should have been in Escorts and Stewards instead...
I did actually mean to put the Langham Dome thread there, but accidentally posted it in CBFS Forum section.

The other place we visited was the Dad's Army Museum in Thetford

But thats another story... :hide:

We had a close family friend who was a controller at Eastern Radar and Neatishead. I sat in with him at Eastern one Sunday afternoon and although a quiet day, an A-10 happened along and he looked after it. It was very interesting to watch military ATC procedures at first hand. Never got to Neatishead, but I doubt they would have let a 'tourist' in there anyway. Must pay it a visit, along with the Dome. :)

I agree with Gordon's elevation to Cultural Attache, by the way. Dave B, you can be naval attache.

My late uncle was radar tech chiefy at Neatishead, he retired the year I graduated from Halton; anyways here's Neatishead in action, with 'Auntie Joan' in charge... ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SI36_iEtOS8

Good vid that , and what's more ... that auntie Joan speaks good sense . It seems that 20 yrs on or so we've not much of a defence force left , especially for the '' What If's ? ''
Just heard today that an acquaintance of ours in the Fleet Air Arm , was warned that he's off to West Africa for 6 months. All the squadrons are fully committed , so trainers and HQ staff are being trawled up to form scratch units !

Cracking Stuff there Pete, Thanks for that.
Never seen that before but enjoyed it. Interesting to see the same Control room actually manned and operational as well...
