Good then, Dave you might be able to answer a few questions about my great and great great grand dads.
mercantile salors .. i never knew.
but i digress for , perhaps, more answers on my grandpa.
Garry, not sure what you mean.
Mike, I'll expect the cloth napkins when I come for dinner!
thanks gents

Cloth napkins? The way that you throw your food around after a few drinks, you'll be lucky if we even get the plates out.
Garry means that someone was indicating a certain person in the group, by scratching the emulsion off the negative with a pin or similar. Clear on the negative prints black on the photo paper.
My father had a camera with bellows, and there was a little window on the back so that you could scratch a note directly onto the negative. That would be in a different spot to the mark in your photo, though.

Re: All our yesterdays...
actually I don't drink anymore. and it's been ..yonks since I've thrown food too.
But If it makes you happy I'll grab a handful of smashed potatoes.
Bombs away!
Dave thanks for the link. I just had a look and it's non the more clearer to me now .
But I'll study harder I will
EDIT
Garry, Mike,
Having a look at a hi res photo it appears to be a mark made in the image itself

Re: All our yesterdays...
Joe,
Here's another link with some details of a book which might help:
http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forum ... pic=107285
OK, even if the mark is on the photo itself, it's no doubt for exactly the same reason as Garry suggested. Putting a circle round the head defaces the picture excessively.
It's tomorrow morning now, I'm going to read some more Enid Blyton to the Grandsons. Nighty night.

Hi Mike,
Rise and Shine !
Thanks for posting the link. I've created an account there and will post the group photo since some in that thread were looking for info regarding the
YS Gordon Highlanders. It's an old thread - 08' so I can't add to it. I suppose I'll look for something current or start a new one.
Cheers
Joe
PS I like my bacon crispy, eggs over easy and my toast dark but not burnt.

Re: All our yesterdays...
Well, actually these are two of today's, but I think they fit the topic.
Spotted this in a local side street. The owners showed up just as I was lining up a shot.
I've blotted out any identification, as I had to put it up on photobucket, and you never know who might be peeking.

Local supermarket car park today...a Hillman Imp, pale blue, very clean condition, normal registration plates (not the red & white limited-use collectors plates).
Took me back to 1963, when I thought it would make a great replacement for my motorbike.

Thought I'd share a "then and now" with you.
Wedding 1969......45th Anniversary 2014:
I can't believe the change - see how I've moved from right to left, and Marg has completely moved from left to right!
