Just turned the old Win7 pc on and there were 9 updates. I accepted them (blindly as one does) and let them install. When the pc rebooted, my intel SSD software was reported broken (though the software itself said it was good) and IE wouldn't open. WTF are M$ playing at I restarted the pc on the off chance this would shuffle things into place but it didn't.. still no explorer (internet variety) and IASTOR.ICON not functioning. Fortunately, Windows explorer didn't suffer the same fate so I went to the updates page and removed all the KB security updates. The end result is that I'm here again.
Be very cautious about installing the latest rash of updates. Looks like the Win7 updates may be blessed with the same probs Win8 has just had
Yes.. I'd thought about using Restore but only as I was already uninstalling the KB updates. That would have been the only option had I not got IE working again. Not heard of Microsoft Fixit before so I'll have a look. I'm certain MS will prompt for me to install the 'missing' KB's as soon as it realises they're gone so I need to be prepared
I don't see it there as a download.. it wants to do things there and then. As it was Internet Explorer that got broken (among other things).. how you're supposed to go online to fix it when it won't open is beyond me. It won't show an error now as the offending KB has been removed. Catch22 me thinks
Just be careful when you come to install it as it will try and install add-on toolbars and other stuff so you need to make sure you deselect those options before committing to the install.
I have used it a couple of times over the years when my computer got messed up and it fixed my issues each time.
Touch wood I let W7 install the updates blindly (14 for me here) last night and following the required reboot, everything seems OK. My Booting SSD is a Crucial M4 and not Intel, so maybe that is where the problem lies.
Hmm.. my booting SSD isn't intel (isn't branded intel) but Ben advised I install the software. It has run faultlessly and automatically since install.. until the update. The software itself said it was functioning ok but Windows didn't believe it. I've no reason to believe the software wasn't working correctly.. just that one of the updates didn't like it. This in turn probably caused IE to error on opening (and constant errors until I closed the window!). I've hidden the updates until such time M$ fix them
Incidentally.. that Fixit program doesn't have a scenario for a windows update breaking windows which I find typical of M$. Can anyone remember a time after an error has occurred when checking online has resolved the issue?? I certainly can't
I keep a stand alone version of Fixit on a USB stick and it has solved a few problems for me from time to time. I am still on XP on this computer so I don't worry about patches. Prior to April when XP support ended, I would wait a few days before installing any patches. I set the updates to notify me but not to download until I ok'd it. That way I could see if there were any problems reported with the patch Tuesday cycle before installing.

I try to get stuff direct from M$ whenever possible though on reflection.. maybe getting updates might be safer from someone else
