Hi Chaps :)

Quite topical at the moment is the arrival of Vera (the Mynarski Lancaster) from Canada so I decided to take her on a quick hop from Coningsby to Shawbury..

I take it that the following a/c sorts itself out regarding runway, taxying & parking - you don't have to leave a wide clearance for it?

Hi Mike :)

No.. the following aircraft goes where you go while remaining +/- in station so if you land on the centreline, it will probably land on the grass :lol: With only one aircraft in formation, it's easy to land to the left of the centreline leaving enough room for it to T/D on the tarmac ;) Things get a little 'untidy' on the ground. Even if you 'think' for the other model/s.. their movement can be unpredictable making them judder sideways and backwards on occasion as they try to maintain a set distance from you. I parked where I did in the shot above knowing there would be enough room for Vera but I had to move forward a couple of times to stop her tail going into that hangar behind us (the model kept moving slowly backward trying to get into it's set position from me).
Landing can also be a bit 'different'. While some models will follow you faithfully to the ground.. some will 'float' and land almost vertically.. Harrier-like.. then move backwards to get into position. Imagine this with 6 different models in formation.. all with different weights and flying characteristics! :lol: Using the same model as the one you're flying as a wingman/formation or, the same version of a model in a formation (eg.. all JY's Phantoms) often produces better results.. especially in the air but you can still get into the same difficulties on the deck and the more you have in formation, the more that have to land on the grass! :worried:

I used to do my Instrument Rating renewal using Shawbury which I think was chosen by the examiner because it has ( or had in those long gone days ) an offset ILS just to make life more awkward! Interesting place to go to , which I think is now helicopter only

Interesting Chris :)

I have to admit I've not tried the ILS in the EarthSim's scenery and it's usually helicopters I fly there (either to or from). Home of the Defence Helicopter Flying School and the Squirrel ;) I deliver relatively close to Shawbury.. though some miles south.. and rarely can I go to that area on a weekday and not see a Squirrel either flying, dropping into a field or popping up out of one :)

If you're an FSXer Chris and you don't have Earthsimulations Shawbury Fields, I can heartily recommend it. It does require an 'above average' PC to run it without FSX crashing mind.. it used to kill my intel 3gb WinXP pc but runs fine on my Win7 64 8gb i5 rig :) All the 'buildings/landmarks' of interest are there as it's used in the sim at Shawbury so things you saw then will almost certainly still be there ;) Can't vouch for that offset ILS though :lol:
