If I select "View unread topics" in IE8, on "Back", I get a new list with the previously read topics removed.
If I do the same with Firefox, I get the same list as I had originally.
Why?

Re: View unread topics?
Not sure George, but I'll look into it. Our PhpBB install is fairly vanilla, other than the mod for the image resizing.

Re: View unread topics?
Hi George,
Sorry for the late reply. I've just had a look and the behaviour on my IE (11) and Firefox 31.0 seems to be the same.
On the off chance I'm doing the wrong thing, I'm clicking on "View Unread Posts". I can't see "view unread topics" but its been a long day.

Re: View unread topics?
Sorry Ben, it was "View unread posts". IE8 does it correctly, dropping the last topic read, Firefox 31 lists all topics since the last visit even after reading a topic.

Re: View unread topics?
OK, I don't know if this helps or just confuses the issue. The only browser that immediately changes the status of a topic I've just read is Safari under OSX. Safari under iOS doesn't always (that is, it will occasionally but more frequently will not), and IE11 under Win7Pro never does. IIRC IE8 under WinXP didn't either, but I finally stopped using that for browsing about a month ago.
And FWIW IE11 has several other weird anomalies browsing the main forum websites I visit. More if you're interested ...

Re: View unread topics?
That is more confusing. I have only FF31 and IE8 on XP and the only one which works correctly is IE8. I have IE10 on W7 and that doesn't work correctly.rohan wrote: IIRC IE8 under WinXP didn't either, but I finally stopped using that for browsing about a month ago.

Re: View unread topics?
Hi George,
I'm in work at the moment, but IE11 and Firefox are behaving as you describe. (there was only one unread post when I checked last night).
It seems (but I haven't been able to confirm for sure) that this is down to the way the modern browsers handle cookies and page refreshes. One of my colleagues has tried with Chrome and gets the same issue. It seems that the more modern browsers don't reload the page when you click back, at least not by default anyway.

Re: View unread topics?
The positive side of this is that if you are tying a post or PM and accidently click away from it, clicking the back button will take you back to the post you were typing and you wont have lost anything. Swings and roundabouts.

Ben.
