Question for DaveB

Post by dodger »

Hi Dave,

I notice you have the JF Lightning can you tell me what the Radar gauge is like for tracking Ai in FSX,

I have installed a Radar gauge in my Alphasim Lightning in FS2004 that shows Ai Height/Range/Speed and Type and shows the distant to the Ai on the Hud as well,

It does say on the JF web site that their Lightning has a highly detailed virtual cockpit with radar scope so i was wondering what it was like,

Any help from you or anyone else who knows would be appreciated,

Thanks,

Roger.

Hi Rog :hello:

It goes too fast to have time to look at the radar mate  I'll wind it up and have a look but from what you mention of your FS9 version.. this one is probably the same. I'll take a look anyway ;)

Here ya go Roger.. hope you can see the detail :cpu:

Image

It gives all the aircraft detail you would ever want to know and more than you'd otherwise get (it shows destination too) :) It also functions well as a navigational radar so it can be used in the absence of a GPS unit. I have almost none of the functions selected there so that you can see the screen as clear as possible but compass rose, NDB/VOR (with or without ID's), ILS, Low and High level tracks, terrain and quite a few other things can be selected from the shift+2 window. This is the first time I've looked at it and on the whole, I think it's very good. The bias is more toward 'peace time' rather than 'combat' but FSX is a peace time sim so the way it's been represented is probably of more use ;)

Thanks Dave, as you say FSX is not a combat sim and to be honest i'm to old and slow for being a Fighter Pilot :| but do i enjoy this aircraft and it gives me a purpose to fly it following the Ai,

:OT: This Lightning is from my era being 72 yrs and the thing that sticks in my mind is seeing the 9 ship Lightning aerobatic team back in 1963 prior to the Reds,

It looks like i know what my next purchase will be! ;)

Cheers,

Roger.

The Aerosoft Lightning, is head and shoulders better than the JF offering, although it's an F3 rather than an F6. It also has a working radar. ;)

I posted a reply to this and it's disappeared  Wonder where its gone and I hope I wasn't rude to anyone!

Anyhoo.. I did say in my reply that the Aerosoft model was very probably more bells and whistles and you'd expect it to be but for the use I get out of fast jets.. the JF Lightning is plenty good enough for me and to be honest, it's one of the few JF models I really do like :cpu: See if it appears in a sale again Roger unless you're desperate to fly it now ;)

FWIW, I bought the AlphaSim Lightning in a sale last year, and almost bought the JF one at Easter but it lost out to the Typhoon. There are quite a few repaints for the JF model but far more for the Alpha one. When the Aerosoft one was released, I thought that it muddied the waters as far as my purchase was concerned, but after all the recent sales and a few too many purchases that may never get flown (or driven), I suspect that I'll simply wait for the next £5 special offer. It won't happen for the Aerosoft model but the JF one may well happen (again). In the long run, it may be that I already have all I need to satisfy my fast jet tastes ... time will tell.

Be aware that the radar shows plan view (i.e. a Plan Position Indicator radar, or PPI) which is somewhat unrealistic. It still does what it is supposed to though.

Hi,

Thanks chaps for your thoughts and knowing how FSX runs on my PC i think i will stick to the JF model as it will probably be the better option.

Cheers,

Roger.
